The First Epistle of Peter September 13, 2015 Bob Eckel 1 1 Peter 5: Conclusion of 1 Peter This is Peter’s final thoughts from his first epistle on trials and suffering! I Peter 4:10 - But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by (in) Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. –What does the God of all grace mean to you? It covers every circumstance at every time! –2 Cor 12:9 - And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. –And what has He via all of His great grace done for us? He’s called us to His eternal glory by (in) Christ Jesus –called us is an aorist active participle that is a strong term better translated summoned. –eternal glory – reflect on this!

The First Epistle of Peter September 13, 2015 Bob Eckel 2 1 Peter 5: Conclusion of 1 Peter –Some texts omit Jesus Christ »John 16:33 - “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” And, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. –after – implies patience and consequences »Is this essential? –a while – means a little, and how do we measure this? McCalley calls these the 4 facets of maturity –All verbs in the aorist active optative mood »Optative indicates a wish or hope, closely related to the subjunctive mood –perfect – make complete »Heb 13:21 - make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. –establish – steadfast or make firm »2 Thess 2:17 - comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. –strengthen – only NT use

The First Epistle of Peter September 13, 2015 Bob Eckel 3 1 Peter 5: Conclusion of 1 Peter »But, Phil 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me –settle – very similar to make stable or establish »Eph 3:17 - that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 1 Peter 5:11 - To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. –To Him, autos – the same or theos Can be used for the trinity, but here the only and true God is best. –glory, doxa - the kingly majesty which belongs to Him as supreme ruler majesty in the sense of the absolute perfection of His deity. –dominion, kratos – relates to power, might –forever and ever. Amen What more can be said; let it be! –1 Pet 4:11 - If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that

The First Epistle of Peter September 13, 2015 Bob Eckel 4 1 Peter 5: Conclusion of 1 Peter in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. –Rev 22:5 - There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. –Constable – “To summarize, Peter exhorted the church elders to shepherd those under their care. He exhorted younger Christians to submit to their older brethren. And he exhorted all to stand firm against Satan's attacks armed with an attitude of submission to God and to one another.” 1 Peter 5:12 - By Silvanus (Silas), our (a) faithful brother as I (suppose) consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. –Silvanus, our (a) faithful brother as I (suppose) consider him Also mentioned or referred to in 2 Cor 1:19, 1Thess 1:1, 2 Thess 1:1

The First Epistle of Peter September 13, 2015 Bob Eckel 5 1 Peter 5: Conclusion of 1 Peter An old companion of Paul – Acts 15:40-17:14. And Silvanus may have been the one to whom Peter was writing and/or transmitting the letter. –Suppose or consider – some uncertainty? »Likely not considering the scriptures listed. »More so indicates a settled persuasion. –I have written to you briefly dia - a short time spent, in a few words, and for a cause –Heb 13:22 - And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words. –exhorting and testifying exhorting – encouraging, strengthening –Frequently used in this epistle testifying – bearing witness –that this is the true grace of God in which you stand What other kind of grace is there but true?

The First Epistle of Peter September 13, 2015 Bob Eckel 6 1 Peter 5: Conclusion of 1 Peter And in this grace we stand – perfect active indicative –We continue by faith, safe and sound – it’s a fact, believe it! 1 Peter 5:13 - She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son. –Who is she? She could be Peter’s wife; however, a better interpretation is the church (feminine in the Greek) at Babylon. –Although ‘church’ is not in the Greek, other versions support this claim - Arabic, Syriac, Vulgate, English. –And this area was included in the spread of the gospel throughout Asia. –What about Babylon? Wuest – “There is a division of opinion among commentators as to whether Peter is using the name "Babylon" in its apocalyptic sense of Rome, or whether he is referring here to the literal city on the Euphrates. The city of Babylon is more likely because at the time of this letter the pagan population of the city and its vicinity, was very considerable.”

The First Epistle of Peter September 13, 2015 Bob Eckel 7 1 Peter 5: Conclusion of 1 Peter Constable believes this is Rome because that’s where John Mark wrote his gospel, and Rome was a symbol of ungodliness (but Babylon too)? –and so does Mark my son Peter and Mark were likely close brethren. –Acts 12:12 - And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. 1 Peter 5:14 - Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen. –Used frequently in closing the eptistles Rom. 16:16; 1 Cor. 16:20; 2 Cor. 13:12; 1 Thess. 5:26 Gill – “a kiss of love is not only opposite to everything that is lascivious and impure, but is expressive of true love and affection, and is hearty and sincere: and such a love the Jews call, as the apostle does here,” –Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen – Phil 4:6,7 For the chosen in Him before the foundation of the world – Eph 1:4
