Getting Started Using Google Drive & Edmodo for Collaboration. Please go to www.Edmodo.com If you already have an account, log in and use the group code cxhehd to join the group for this session. If you do not have an account, create a STUDENT account (it’s free!) and use the code cxhehd to join the group for this session. Once you sign into the site, the “Join a Group” button is to the left. ‘ The superhero quiz is optional, but please answer the poll questions. Then check out an example of Edmodo class guidelines developed by a colleague. If you already have a Google account, you may want to log in. However, it won’t be necessary to have a Google account for this session.

Edmodo Group Code: cxhehd Using Google Drive & Edmodo to Increase Classroom efficiency and collaboration Keith Johnson Instructional Technology Institute 2015 ELA Teacher at Rollings Middle School of the Arts Dorchester District 2

About Me I am an ELA Teacher at Rollings Middle School of the Arts. Edmodo Group Code: cxhehd I am an ELA Teacher at Rollings Middle School of the Arts. I have published zero books. I am not endorsed or “certified” by Google or Edmodo. I do not maintain that I am an expert in regards to Google Drive or Edmodo; I simply think they make my classroom run more efficiently. If you have previously used Google Drive and/or Edmodo in a way that you found beneficial and I do not mention, I encourage you to share your experience during this session!

Rationale Edmodo Group Code: cxhehd Google Drive and Edmodo provide free digital tools that can help teachers and students more effectively communicate, collaborate, and manage time. It has never been easier to give and receive feedback; save and share work; and edit and revise work. These programs can supplement class content as well as provide alternate modes of communication and collaboration outside of class.

Objectives Edmodo Group Code: cxhehd Explore and use Google Drive (Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Forms). Open a document, use features, save, and share. See examples of classroom application of Google Drive. Explore and use Edmodo. Posting on Edmodo; submitting work on Edmodo; annotating in Edomo; saving files in Edmodo See examples of classroom application of Edmodo.

Using Google Drive Click the Google Apps button You’ll end up on a page like this. Click Drive

Exploring Google Drive I have linked a sample Google Doc and a sample Google Slides presentation in the Edmodo group. Use the links in Edmodo to access these files to explore some of their functions. These files are also hyperlinked, in case you’ve opened this presentation from Sched.org. Sample Google Docs Sample Google Slides Sample Google Form

/ CLASSROOM APPLICATION: COLLOBORATING ON A PRESENTATION Students can collaborate and comment in real-time.

CLASSROOM APPLICATION: GIVING FEEDBACK TO STUDENTS Comments are connected to highlighted text.

Conferencing can happen outside the classroom at teacher’s/student’s convenience.

The highlights and comments work great for modeling/examples without the need for individual student copies.

Google Drive: Pros and Cons P.S. If you set up a Google account to use exclusively for class, why not use Google’s blogger for a class blog or to post student work? Pros Cons Work is saved automatically as students type. Work can be accessed from any computer (PC & MAC) with internet connection. Work can be shared with anyone who can access the internet. Google Apps can be accessed on most devices. Internet accessibility is difficult for some students. You must be at least thirteen years old to create a Google account (which can also be a pro). Google Drive does not have ALL the features of other word processors (For instance, fonts are limited.).

Edmodo: Classroom Application The owner of the group will receive an email when group members comment. This allows student/teacher more opportunities to collaborate. It’s easy to post directions, examples, notes, and files, and students can also easily find these items.

Edmodo: Classroom Application It’s easy to post videos. Just copy the link. I post daily PPTs as .pdf files for absent students.

Example Class Assignment:

Edmodo: Pros and Cons Pros Cons Student-friendly (looks like a social media site) Parent-friendly (parent codes allow parents to see their own child’s assignments and posts from class) Control over commenting Easy to post comments, assignments, due dates, videos, and files Edmodo App Students sometimes “miss” folders because they’re to the side Default settings allow students to comment without teacher moderation Edmodo App’s functionality could use some work. Edmodo will encourage you to buy stuff.
