Green Rabbit Garden Design: Integrating Engineering Across The Curriculum Lufkin ISD 1 st Grade Gifted/Talented Ann Goff, Kellye Marshall, Connie Shriver 2012 ASEE K-12 Workshop on Engineering Education

2009-Present A big educational push was beginning on increasing STEM lessons in the classroom. We found a summer academy at Purdue University involving Engineering in Elementary. Since attending we have had the opportunity to work with Purdue doing onsite research, workshops, and support integrating engineering into our classrooms. Art work taken from

What does engineering look like in your classroom? Meet the person next to you! Materials needed: Marker/Large construction paper Assignment: Write down any engineering activities you have done in your classroom and your grade level.

Biggest Obstacles Time? How were we to add something else in our curriculum when we already didn’t have enough time to teach what was required? We have tweaked this every year! Be flexible and be creative with integration!

What is Technology? In pairs – meet someone NOT from your teacher educator team Look at pictures on the cards Fill out “Technology Around Us” for your item. 6

An evolving definition for technology....  Any object or process that people create and use to enhance the current quality of life 8

Yi Min’s Great Wall Museum of Science, Boston Each of the characters in these books is from a different country, culture, or ethnic background. The lead character is faced with a challenge in his or her own world or daily life that can be solved through engineering. This story involves a family member that is a materials engineer.

What did we integrate? Math -involved area, mass, volume, non-standard measurement, arrays, data analysis, problem solving and graphing. Science -involved plants, animals, rocks, soil, and recycling. Writing- How to? Predictions and journaling Language Arts- Reading about China; Compare/Contrast US with China, and determining importance. Social Studies- Culture, Maps

Meet Baxter –Our resident bunny in the science lab!

Exploring As we get more comfortable with engineering we are always looking for new ideas! 1 st grade Assembly Line-Team building! Paper Table-constructed out of newspaper Weather –recycled weather instruments for Haiti Penguins- Make models for a toy company Research-Different types of engineers Lego-WeDo Robotics-How are robots used in society? Engineering Journals/Science Journals

Lego Exploration!

How do you find engineering in something you already do?
