Reinforce The Theme Theme Question: How do living things grow and change? Look at page 25 of The Emperor’s Egg What does the text tell you about the differences between an adult and a young penguin? What about the pictures? What do you think it’s like to be a father penguin?

Vocabulary Strategy Thesaurus  A thesaurus is a tool for finding words with similar meanings, or synonyms. If you read an unfamiliar word, a synonym might help you understand that word  Words in a thesaurus are listed alphabetically, as in a dictionary. The entry word is followed by a list of synonyms. Example: Miserable: sad, unhappy, joyless Replace:

Comprehension Skill Fact and Opinion Facts are statements that can be proven Opinions are what someone believes Opinion Clues: I believe, I think, in my view How do I know the difference between fact and opinion? I ask myself:  Can this statement be proven?  How could I check this statement?  Do any of these statements tell me what the author thinks or believes? Fact or opinion? Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. Winters there are terrible.

Prepare to Read Setting: Where and When a story takes place. The setting- cold, windy Antarctica – affects how Emperor Penguins care for eggs. How might a warmer setting change how they raise chicks? Read together pages  Find one fact.  Find one opinion.  What words does the author use to describe how cold the setting is?  How do pictures help you understand the setting?

Phonics /a/ spelled ey Birds catch worms to eat. The worm is the prey. What vowel sound do you hear in prey? The dogs will obey commands. Whey is something used to make cheese. Hey, don’t eat all the raisins. Word families: H+ey= Th+ey= Ob+ey=

Writing: Persuasive Poster Writing models chart, p44. (practice companion pg. 137) What does the author do to grab readers’ attention? How does the author include facts and opinions? Why do you think the headline or slogan occurs at the top of the poster? Does this poster have facts, opinions, or both?

Write a First Draft Persuasive Language: The event I am going to advertise on my poster is the upcoming bake sale. As I write, I want to use persuasive language to convince readers they should buy something. I could say “The treats are good.” But it would be more persuasive to say “Nothing beats homemade treats.”

Persuasive Poster Come to Cosley Elementary’s LAST BAKE SALE OF THE YEAR Friday, May 10 th during lunch Lunch is better with a special treat. Nothing beats homemade treats! Don’t miss your last chance to buy them. The money we raise will be donated to the Humane Society. Every treat you buy will help our furry friends!

Grammar Adjectives that compare: -er, -est Is a rabbit faster than a squirrel? Is a deer the fastest animal of the three? Adjectives that end in –er compare two things. Adjectives that end in –est compare more than two things. Is the sentence about two things or more than two things? o I ate a smaller lunch today than yesterday. o Ms. Hill bought the freshest pears, apples, and melons of them all. o Mr. Lee’s cat is nicer than his dog.
