Problem Employees and Problem Bosses: How to Reclaim your Vision

Five Fatal A ttitudes: 1. Anger 2. Apathy 3. Arrogance 4. Anguish 5. Anxiety All are amplified by stress Stress is amplified by uncertainty Uncertainty erodes cultures

It might be said that “problem employees” are out-of-sync with the rest of us. most workplace problems are interpersonal rarely from malice or incompetence usually emotional (ego, insecurities, scars) conditioned thinking patterns Same holds true for problem bosses!

Overwhelm Them with Certainty “Either I keep up with the drummer, or I don’t play in this band.”

Within problem work units there is usually: Anxiety Temptation Uncertainty Chaos Stress Quiet employees going about their work is not always a good sign.

How long will your employees / coworkers have to wait until the next: Staff meeting? Employee social gathering? Performance evaluation? Employee recognition award? Opportunity to influence policy? Review of salary? Visit from upper management? Chance to give feedback? Budget preparation meetings? Legislative initiatives? Internal or external audit?

Create Cadence If something is important to the stability and effectiveness of your organization: Schedule it! Do it! “...a dinosaur, an implosion, a wreck...” - Businessweek

Give it 9-12 months.... significant reduction in s improved relationships more creative thinking sub-cadence “plug-ins” easier to get help from upper-mgt better records – better info sharing higher capacity to manage work stress
