Transitioning from High School to Career BRIDGE TO SUCCESS

Employability/Earning power BRIDGE TO SUCCESS

Challenges – Percentage who graduate from high school: 68% nationally – Percentage of graduates who enroll in college: 65.9% – Percentage of first-time students who take at least one developmental course: 83.2% – Average percentage of graduates from Union County high schools who require some remediation in college: 68.2% – Percentage of graduates who complete college: 18-32% in AR Bridging the Gap Getting high school students on the road to success before they graduate BRIDGE TO SUCCESS

Finding the Right Exit Ramp Off the Bridge

ADHE Performance Funding Reports South Arkansas Community College  Location: El Dorado/Union County (pop. ~19,000/43,000)  College established: 1992* *Formed in 1992 when Southern Arkansas University- El Dorado branch (’74) and Oil Belt Technical College (‘67) merged.  Spring 2014 Enrollment: 1669  Demographics: – 72% Female; 28% Male – 56% Caucasian; 39% Black; 3% Hispanic – Average age: 29 (without HS concurrent) – Almost 2/3 come from Union County

ADHE Performance Funding Reports MISSION STATEMENT South Arkansas Community College promotes excellence in learning, teaching, and service ; provides lifelong educational opportunities ; and serves as a cultural, intellectual, and economic resource for the community. Vision Statement South Arkansas Community College will strive to be the leading resource for accessible education, workforce training, partnerships and economic development for our region.

ADHE Performance Funding Reports Remedial and Non-Remedial Course Success For these measures, success is determined by the total successful number of student semester hours over the total number attempted during the academic year. All grades of “D” or better are used for non-remedial classes and “C” or better for remedial classes. *The 2013 AY value will be updated when available. **ANC, COTO, MSCC, PCCUA, SAUT, SEAC, UACCH Our Basic Studies Instructors are always looking into new approaches to improve the success of our students. Curriculum changes in our remedial math, reading, and writing classes have had a positive impact in these classes.

ADHE Performance Funding Reports Graduation Totals The Arkansas Department of Higher Education counts all of the credentials earned by a graduate within the academic year using the guidelines of multiple credentials at the same level with the same CIP code in the same term will only be counted once. *The 2013 AY value will be updated when available. **ANC, COTO, MSCC, PCCUA, SAUT, SEAC, UACCH SouthArk’s major increases in enrollments between Fall 2007 and Fall 2009 may have resulted in an increase in the number of graduates. Participation in and activities related to the College Completion Initiative may also be a source for the growth. Go, Grow, Graduate!

ADHE Performance Funding Reports Total Credentials Rate Full time enrollment (FTE) is the total number of credit hours taken during the academic year divided by 30. The total credentials rate is the percentage equivalent of all credentials earned divided by the annual FTE value/100. SouthArk’s major increases in enrollments between Fall 2007 and Fall 2009 dramatically increased the FTE totals thereby dropping our total credential rates temporarily. As the FTE values have leveled out, South Ark's graduation totals have notably increased over the past year.

ADHE Performance Funding Reports Adult Learner and Minority Credentials The Minority Credential total is an overall headcount of students, who self-report as Asian, Black, Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native, or Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and complete a technical certificate or associate degree. The Adult Learner Credential total is an overall headcount of adult students, those who are 25 or older, who complete a certificate of proficiency, technical certificate or associate degree.

Digital learning opportunities SouthArk approved to offer distance learning Act 1280 –beginning in , – “all public school districts and public charter schools shall provide at least one digital learning course to their students as either a primary or supplementary method of instruction” – “beginning with ninth grade class of the school year, each high school student shall be required to take at least one digital learning course for credit to graduate” BRIDGE TO SUCCESS

Bridging the Gap Over 45% of students who graduated in 2009 & 2010 with a SouthArk AA and went to a 4-Year college or university, graduated from that school within 3 years. That percentage is a higher rate than students who started at those 4-year schools. BRIDGE TO SUCCESS
