Process for obtaining local Priority Registration for MESA Students College Senate VP Student Services/Instruction IS: Cohort Senate Support MESA Director Priority Registration Success! 1.MESA Director determines process for obtaining Priority Reg. This is usually under the discretion of the VPSS but may be under the VPI or Senate (depending on campus). 2.Regardless if Senate support is/isn’t needed, present MESA to your local Senate (Talking points on next slide). Emphasize need for Priorirty Registration. Support from your Senate can assist in both convincing your VPSS/VPI as well as estabilishing and maintaining Priority Reg for your students. 3.After gaining approval, work with IS to estabilish your MESA Cohort in your local database. Students should be given a registration date that is 1- 2 days after the registration date for mandated groups.

Suggested Talking Points & Strategies Propose resolution Yes Resistant MESA Overview: Emphasize Objectives & Support for First Generation Students MESA is a model Program: Complies with SSTF recommendations MESA Data: Supply registration data Bring MESA Students and Faculty Sponsors for support Resolution Support from Senate Emphasize effect on society: Increased STEM Workforce If it seems you have support, follow the next steps: If they seem resistant, follow the next steps: Emphasize effect on college: Increased Transfer/Success Rates Emphasize effect on society: Increased STEM Workforce Emphasize the small # of students anticipated to utilize this privilege

Resolution: Local Priority Registration for MESA Students Whereas the State of California is experiencing a significant shortage in the number of qualified native engineers and scientists matriculating from its institutions compared to needs in the economy, and Whereas the student membership of the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Community College Program consists of educationally and financially disadvantaged students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields whose goal is to transfer to a four-year college or university, and Whereas impacted math and science courses impede the timely transfer of MESA students and, Whereas the inability of MESA students to enroll in sequential math and science courses, required for their high unit majors, unnecessarily delays the transfer of these students and postpones their eventual matriculation from the four-year institutions, Therefore be it resolved that, MESA students should be afforded the same priority registration benefits as their underrepresented student counterparts participating in programs which grant priority registration.
