Standards and coding Used for: corrosion protection of steel parts. Standards: EN 12329, ISO a.o. Code: zinc blue chromate - Fe/Zn xx c 1 A zinc yellow chromate - Fe/Zn xx c 2 C zinc olive - Fe/Zn xx c 2 D zinc green - Fe/Zn xx c green zinc black - Fe/Zn xx c black Fe = steel (basis material), Zn = zinc (electrolytic zinc), xx = layer thickness c = chromatised: 1A= blue / clear, 1B= iridizing / blue, 2C= yellow, 2D= Olive Remark: black is not standard. Example: Fe/Zn 12 c 2C = 12 micron zinc, c=chromat, 2C=yellow

Quality Control Several quality control methods can be applied : Layer thickness (Eddi current or magnetic type, X- Ray ) Visual - color, bubbles, scratches, peel off Adhesion. Tape. Or rubbed by rubber / paper.
Process Flow - Simplified Degrease and etching baths. Rinsing Process bath with zinc-electrodes. (Electric current and time is set.) Several Rinsing baths. Dipping in chromate bath to protect oxidation (zinc can corrode) - passivation. Rinse and dry off
Passivation / chromate: The Chromate layer is sensitive during the first 24 hours. Passivation / chromate layer must not be heated more than max. 80 degrees. Colors can vary and can have differences like "flames” on same part.
Layer Thickness 5 microns: little protection - for use in hot / dry conditions 8 microns: normal for indoor use 12 microns: for indoor -/out door use in apparatus >25 microns: max. corrosion protection
Measurable Thickness Layer thickness is measured on the middle of a part. The customer can point out the critical surfaces ("significant surfaces"). Measurement must be done more than 20 mm from an edge or hole. Every spot that can be touched by a Ø 20 mm ball inside a part can be measured. The layer thickness inside corners or inside complex details can be very thin, caused by the nature of electrolytic plating. Complex details might also give rinsing problems, causing discoloration or remains of salts on the parts. Zinc layer is thicker on edges and on outside corner/edge details. Observe that layer thickness of 25 micron or more will have higher risk of peeling off / bubbles, and that the edges can have excess layer thickness.
To be aware of after Zinc Plating The parts should be stored 24 before use. If parts are to be painted, an etch-primer can be recommended.
