Why Do We Have Phases of the Moon?
Phases of the Moon. The moon revolves around the Earth and rotates on its axis approximately every 29.5 days.

Phases of the Moon Standard 1 Students will understand that the appearance of the moon changes in a predictable cycle as it orbits Earth and as Earth rotates.
 The word "month" comes from “Moon.”  Long ago, a month represented the time it took to complete one cycle of the changing Moon phases (~ 29.5 days).

Phases of the Moon The Moon and Sun are in synchronous rotation- that means both rotate at the same rate. So the same side faces the Earth at all times.

The Changing Moon

How the moon's appearance changes during the lunar cycle?

Engagement One summer Woody and Lynn's mom and dad sent them to summer camp. Every night they went looking for snipes. On the first night they noticed the moon was very large and bright. As each night passed, they noticed that they could see less and less of the moon. Woody said it was because the sun is in a different position each night. Lynn disagreed. She said "You're wrong! It' the position of the moon that changes."

Focus What causes the moon to look different throughout the month?

Prediction or Hypothesis Examples that can be used. If _______ then, _______ because_____________. I think that ________ because ________________.

phase gibbous waxing waning new moon crescent quarter rotate revolve reflection A temporary state of being. More than half but not yet full. In the process of getting larger. In the process of getting smaller. When the back side of the moon is facing the Earth. Less than half but not a new moon. One fourth of something. To spin in place. To spin around another object. Light bouncing off another object. Vocabulary

General Plan Constant : position of the light, where the student stands in the room Independent Variable: the placement of the moon as it revolves around your body(Earth) Dependent Variable: the change in the shadow on the moon

Operational Plan First, turn on the simulated sun (light) Second, stand in the same spot throughout the experiment. Third, hold and revolve your moon model around your body and observe what you see. Next, Final, Operational Plan
