AimGoal: How did the dynastic cycle influence life in China? Do Now: Think about other dynasties? Describe them, Vocabulary Mandate of Heaven: A ruler’s divine right to rule What does divine mean? Why do you think ruler’s needed God’s approval to rule effectively?

Lives of common people improved; taxes reduced; farming encouraged. Problems begin (extensive wars, invasions, etc.) Taxes increase; men forced to work for army. Farming neglected. Govt. increases spending; corruption. Droughts, floods, famines occur. Poor lose respect for govt. They join rebels & attack landlords. Rebel bands find strong leader who unites them. Attack the emperor. Emperor is defeated !! The emperor reforms the govt. & makes it more efficient. Start here 

It influenced the culture of China. This system used both ideographs and pictographs, signs that expressed thoughts or ideas.

On turtle shells, Shang priests wrote questions addressed to the gods or the ancestors. Priests then heated the bone or shell until it cracked. By interpreting the pattern of cracks, they could gain communicate with the ancestors and gain wisdom.

To justify rebellion against the Shang, the Zhou promoted the idea of the Mandate of Heaven. From this point forward, the dynastic cycle would be the way that government was determined.
