RHYMING AS A WAY TO STUDY ENGLISH Researcher: Bogutskaya K. – 9 th grade Tutor: Kurnikova L.N.

Introduction Nowadays to learn English is very actual, because we need it for communication with foreigners. It also allows to get a well-paid job or get a job abroad; it gives a chance to read different literature, because 80% information in Internet Network is in English; It facilitates to communicate while you are travelling etc.

Different ways of studying English You should: memorise phrases practise listening to English songs and writing the texts get a pen friend in an English-speaking country practise as much as possible in class read books in English for pleasure

Different ways of studying English play any English games create crossword puzzles read a few pages of easy English texts and retell what you read aloud listen to any spoken English on television, radio, records or cassettes

Different ways of studying English write translations from English into Russian and vice versa write down as many words from the letters of a given word as possible work with a friend and test each other’s abilities

But the best way to learn English is rhyming.

Rhyming We sure this topic is new and actual. It is little studied, and you cannot find the description of this way to study English nowhere.

Purpose: Study the opportunities of rhyming as a way to learn English

Tasks: Learning easy pattern poetry Trying to make verses’ translation Writing own verses following pattern poetry

Hypothesis: Rhyming makes your work fascinating and funny and gives you the chance to learn more about foreign literature and different authors.

Theoretical and practical methods of research: studying various publications, such as poems, biography descriptions of poets and analytical articles; working with the Internet sites; doing a series of surveys; analyzing their results; publishing a collection of students’ verses;

Resources: Internet sites: http://www.comenglish.ru http://en.wikipedia.org http://englishhobby.ru Speak Out. 6/2002, November-December. Publish by “ГЛОССА-ПРЕСС”. General publisher I. Cvetkova. Speak Out. 1/2003, January-February. Published by “ГЛОССА-ПРЕСС”. General publisher I. Cvetkova. Методическая мозаика. Приложение к журналу «Изучение Английского в школе». 7/2006

Results of research: My research confirmed that our hypothesis - rhyming makes your work fascinating and funny and gives you the chance to learn more about foreign literature and different authors - is true.

Examples of poetry we offer you to try: limericks clerihews grooks haikus acrostic poems cinquains

I asked 47 people the question ‘Do you know something about a few kinds of English versification such as limerick, clerihew, cinquain, grook, haiku, acrostic poem?’ 20 people said ‘yes’ and 27 ones said ‘no’. It is a good result, ‘cause more that 2/3 know something about some pattern poetry we offer.

In my research we will learn in detail only limericks, clerihews, cinquains, and grooks, because they are the most famous.

Limericks Limericks are humorous short poems. It becomes popular by the British poet and painter Edward Lear. It is not a modern invention. Many of their authors are anonymous. Classic limerick has 5 lines – 3 long and 2 short ones. It usually begins by introducing a person and a place and has surprising in the last line.

Limericks There was a young lady whose eyes, were unique as to colour and size; When she opened them wide, People all turned aside, And started away in surprise. A cheerful old bear at the Zoo Could always find something to do. If it bored him to go On a walk to and fro, He’d turn round and walk fro and to. Edward Lear

American cinquain Cinquain is an class of poetic forms that employ a 5-line pattern. The first line is a one-word title; the second line is a pair of adjectives describing that title; the third line is a three word phase that gives more information; the fourth line consists of four words describing feelings related to that subject; and the fifth line is a single word synonym for the subject from line one.

American cinquain Listen... With faint dry sound, Like steps of passing ghosts, The leaves, frost-crisp'd, break from the trees And fall. Adelaide Crapsey

Clerihews Clerihews are short, funny and easy to write poems. They can be about any person or a character, real or not. It can be about animals, cartoon characters, rock groups. Clerihew were invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley. They have 4 lines, which don’t have to be of the same length. The first line has to contain the name of a person. The first two lines have to rhyme – so do the last do.

Clerihews The people of Spain think Cervantes Equal to a dozen Dantes; An opinion resented most bitterly By the people of Italy. E.C. Bentley Mused while he ought to have studied intently. It was this muse That inspired clerihews. M. Curl

Grooks A grook is a form of short aphoristic poem. It was invented by the Danish poet and scientist Piet Hein. For his grooks Hein was nominated three times for the Nobel Prize.

Grooks The Final Touch Portrait of nobody in particular Idiots are really one hundred per cent when they are also intelligent. Remedies’ Remedies Pills are useful against ills and against too many pills. Piet Hein

Useful advice: To write verses is not so difficult. You just should following particular pattern of poetry in order to write them faithfully.

Faithfully translation My research also touches on a problem of doing faithful verses’ translation. It is very important, because otherwise the meaning will be lost. To keep all beauty of words in English when you translate it on your own language is necessary.

Some rules of faithfully translation: 1. Write down all words in Russian you need from dictionary in such order as they are contained in the sentence. 2. Find the predicate. 3. Define the tense of the predicate (present, past or future). 4. Define the subject of the sentence. 5. Find the place of the prepositions. 6. Reiterate this work with other sentences containing in you verse.

Useful advice: The most important in verses is rhythm. Original rhyme also is a way to stress your eccentricity.

IN CONLUSION I finished my research and I can say that rhyming as a way to study English has a lot of advantages, in contrast of other ways, and gives us many abilities to improve our English. I hope you will use rhyming as your own way to study English.

Rhyming short verses allows you to: IN CONLUSION Rhyming short verses allows you to: learn new English words; practice in their pronunciation; build a speech power; develop your translation skills;

Do write such poems and you’ll have a lot of fun and profit. Good luck!
