SIMPLE SENTENCES A Simple sentence contains 1 independent clause. An independent clause is a sentence that can stand all by itself. Examples: Jeff went to the grocery store to buy some milk. Sally watched T.V. with her older brother.
COMPOUND SENTENCE A Compound sentence contains 2 independent clauses. It can be formed by a semicolon, colon, comma, or by a coordinating conjunction. ( List of some coordinating conjunctions: and, but, nor, and so) Example: Matt played football with his friends and he made a touchdown.
COMPLEX SENTENCE A Complex sentence contains 1 independent clause and 1 dependent clause. A dependent clause is a sentence that can not stand by itself. Example: After the stormed passed, a rainbow appeared.
COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE A Compound complex sentence contains at least 2 independent clauses and 1 dependent clause. Example: After Sam got an A on her math test, her parents gave her $20 but she did not know what to buy with it.
