Its constant innovations have touched so many industries and have been a catalyst to the success of many life-changing products. One field in particular that technology has influenced is the medical field by creating an overall better, more efficient environment for the scientists, doctors/staff, and patients. Within the medical field falls surgery, where over 51.4 million inpatient surgical procedures are performed annually and with that high of numbers the accuracy of success is extremely imperative (CDC). As a stem of laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery is a technological advance that is on the rise for increasing the precision for those surgeries. Although there are many questions contesting the purpose of this method, the advantages of robotic surgery are incomparable and contribute to the positive outlook for its future. B ACKGROUND Robotic surgery is a form of surgical technology that places a computer-assisted electromechanical device in the path between the surgeon and patient. The idea began in 1987 when robots were first introduced with laparoscopic surgery and eventually evolved into a new form of surgical procedure that allowed a human-operated machine to make one tiny incision versus the earlier method of multiple incisions. Before it became an established method, the Stanford Research Institution, NASA and the United States Army were the first groups that became interested in this new advancement and led it to it being introduced to the public surgical community. The first non-laparoscopic robot created was the Puma560 and the first to be approved by the FDA is called Robodoc. Robotic Surgery is now available for pediatric, gynecologic, general abdomen, urologic, and thoracic practices. A DVANTAGES Comparison of Robotic Surgery Vs.
