LESSON 54 Turn in short answers to tray; will accept until end of day for full credit Half Credit will be taken through the end of the week for ALL missing work in the TKAM Unit

EA 5.2: ANALYSIS ESSAY  Instructions + Outline  Rubric will be separate—do NOT lose! Needs to be stapled to front of completed essay on due date  Period 2: Wednesday, 5/28  Periods 1, 4, 5, 7: Thursday, 5/29  Late essays will be accepted until Sunday, June 1 st at 9:00pm by  I will check time stamp  Consequences of not turning in this essay: retake English 9, semester 2, in the online lab

CHOOSING A SIGNIFICANT PASSAGE  First thing you will need to do today:  Identify a significant (important) passage in TKAM that identifies a coming of age experience—think about the different experiences the children have gone through, and how that could affect coming of age.  What about Scout putting herself into Boo’s shoes at the end?  What about the trial scene affecting Jem so much? What does he begin to understand?  What about Scout identifying herself as a lady after being so defiant?  Identify if this passage is using coming of age through a character, through the setting, or through the conflict  Do a close reading on this passage – Next slide

CLOSE READING 1)Write down words you do not know; define them by writing your own definition based on the dictionary definition 2)Identify the characters involved, the setting of the passage, and the conflict. Next, identify which one is most prominent. Explain how the literary element is so important to the passage. 3)Explain how this passage is an example of coming of age. 4)Briefly write down a few sentences as to how you could show coming of age to somebody else in this passage. 5)Pick out two smaller quotes from the passage as a whole that help your argument that it is a coming of age passage

THESIS  Construct a thesis statement by answering the following questions first:  What is Harper Lee (the author) trying to show the audience about coming of age?  Why is it important?  Turn both of these answers, as well as what you’ve determined from your close reading, into a one sentence statement. Be sure to include the title and author in your thesis statement.  Example: In her novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows the importance of what it means to come of age through the eyes of Scout Finch and her need to

HOMEWORK  Close reading of your passage (Slide 4)  Create a thesis statement  Steps 7 & 8 in the essay packet (picking out the important quotes)
