Relation between Amount of Fallen Ash and Height of Volcanic Smoke Senior High School at Otsuka, University of Tsukuba University of Tsukuba Nobuaki Kawasaki Masami Isoda - How to Relate Height of Volcanic Smoke to observed Fallen Ash -

My Purpose is to Estimate Amounts of Fallen Ash. The higher volcanic smoke rise, much more ash will fall. We think that this tendency will be estimated easily. But it is not so simple. If we scatter diagram of relation between height of volcanic smoke and amount of fallen ash, there are many cases that doesn't have correlations. But if we think another conditions and if we can make a model of fallen ash related the height of volcanic smoke, we may be able to estimate the amount of fallen ash at each observation point strictly. So I want to make a model of that relation in addition to other conditions. Some of today's contents are used for demonstration science lesson on last Saturday.

This picture is one of the most famous volcano named "Sakurajima" in Japan. If this volcano erupt, there are not a little possibilities of causing disasters. Today, I treat one of the disasters, that is fallen ash.

This is Japan islands. Here is Kagoshima Prefecture.

This is volcano named "Sakurajima".

I went to Kagoshima Meteorological Agency in last March, just at the time, volcano erupted. I took this picture at that time.

The word “Torii” means an entrance of temple in case of Japan. By the way, this is a famous “Torii” in Hiroshima Prefecture. It is enrolled as a world heritage.

This is torii at Sakurajima. This torii was buried by fallen ash. This part is the top of "Torii" I went to Sakurajima in this March.

I had not known this "Torii" in the place of approximately 5km from the volcano before I went here. The same phenomena has caused.

When the volcano erupts, this shelter is used for saving lives.

This is an elementary school near the crater of the volcano.

When I went to this place, the volcano erupted.
