Right To Know Students have three safety rights 1. The right to know what is hazardous 2. The right to know how it is hazardous 3. The right to know how to protect yourself

Right To Know The teacher has three responsibilities 1. The responsibility to tell you what is hazardous 2. The responsibility to tell you how it is hazardous 3. The responsibility to tell you how to protect yourself.

All accidents should be reported to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor. Only those laboratory activities where the teacher has given instructions and permission should be performed. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited. Written and verbal instruction should be followed carefully.

No food, beverage or smoking is permitted in the laboratory. Never taste, smell or touch chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so. Take great care in noticing odors or fumes. Use a wafting motion of the hand. Never put a bottle to your nose and breathe deeply.

Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap at the conclusion of each lab period. Work areas must be kept clean and tidy. Students should always clean and wipe dry all desks, tables and laboratory work areas at the conclusion of each activity. If glassware cracks, chips or breaks notify the teacher immediately. Never pick up broken glass yourself. Call the teacher for assistance.

Students are not permitted in laboratory storage rooms or teacher workrooms unless directly instructed to do so. Upon first entering the laboratory, students are not permitted to touch equipment until directed to do so. Horseplay, running, pushing, shoving and practical jokes will not be tolerated Students should note the location of the emergency equipment and know the proper fire drill procedure.

Fire Exits - Doors Classroom to middle of hall by drinking fountain and out the door the proceed to walkway by road Line up in single file, no talking In an emergency: may go down hall or through storage room –Windows Open blinds Unlock Release latch Open window

Waste Disposal First ask your teacher where/how to dispose of waste. Never pour anything down the drain unless you are told to do so. A waste bottle will be supplied for substance that cannot go down the drain

Reasons for proper waste disposal Hazardous chemicals down the drain can lead to pollution of ground water, lakes, rivers, etc. Plants and animals will die if they are exposed to hazardous chemical waste. Serious health problems will become present in people if hazardous waste finds its way into drinking water.

Eating and drinking in lab is not allowed because… A. you could ingest chemicals harmful to your body B. you should only eat during your lunch period C. if you didn't bring enough to share, then you should not have brought it D. chemicals are high in calories

What should you do when glass breaks during a lab? A. pick it up with bare hands B. kick it under the counter C. clean it up with a dust brush and pan D. step on it so it breaks into smaller pieces

If you accidentally get something in your eye, you should first….. A. rub the eye very quickly with soap and water B. flush your eyes in the eye wash C. go to the nurse D. let you eye produce tears to flush it out

So you’re at your lab table. You finish your lab, but the other lab group at your table is still working. What do you do with your goggles? A. Take them off B. Keep them above the eyes C. Keep the goggles on

Before leaving the lab, you must always… A. return items to their proper location B. wash and wipe down your table top C. wash your hands D. all the above

Lab Safety by Rhythm, Rhyme, and Results Wait, you’ve gotta make sure that your lab is safe Before you make a measurement, scope out the space Got your gloves pulled up, got your goggles on Don’t want to be another lab experiment gone wrong Go with goggles, go with the gloves! Go without food, and spit out your gum! Go safe! Go safe! And get into it Go safe scientists, no accidents!

You know the science lab can be a pretty dangerous place You gotta wear safety goggles to protect your face And just in case you still end up with stuff in your eye You should know how to find the eyewash nearby And as a matter of fact, know where the exits are too ‘Cause if a fire starts, you better know what to do And you don’t have to be a hero, try to break the mold Be sure to follow all directions and just do as you’re told

It reminds me of this time I was sitting in lab Trying to work through the experiment and give it a stab When my partner started grabbing chemicals from the shelves Started mixing up some liquids with unusual smells Before he could stop, it began to bubble up In a couple of seconds he was in deep, deep trouble So maybe mixing crazy potions didn’t go as he’d planned He didn’t follow the directions and he burned his hand (ouch!)

Wait, you’ve gotta make sure that your lab is safe Before you make a measurement, scope out the space Got your gloves pulled up, got your goggles on Don’t want to be another lab experiment gone wrong Go with goggles, go with the gloves! Go without food, and spit out your gum! Go safe! Go safe! And get into it Go safe scientists, no accidents!

It’s lab time and you’re ballin’, on top of things Hypothesis made the call on what you want to see But hold up, because it looks like you forgot some things Before you pour, let me know what’s wrong with this scene Your eyes are wide open to take in results Or get blinded by all kinds of chemicals They could splash up and mess up your complexion So keep it hot, yo, and don those goggles

The same goes for your fingers, your hair, and your toes No flip-flops, your kicks should have the tips closed Your fingers should slip through the wrists of some gloves No acid contamination on your palms And your nose, you’ve gotta steer clear of the chemicals Or they’ll burn your nostrils (and you kind of want those!)

Protect it, don’t smell it, just waft with me, waft with me Don’t need no medics, just waft with me, waft with me Hands over the flask, your nose hanging back Keep your nostrils intact, just waft with me, waft with me

Hey, I think I really like this lab stuff I’m gonna do it again tomorrow ’cause I can’t get enough Of safely making crazy things happen, it’s fun It’s amazing, I’ve seen the reactions, I’m done You’re almost done man, can you tell me your plan For what to do with all that toxic waste in your hand? I just heard the bell ring, I’ve gotta think quick I think I’ll wash it down the sink

Whoa, whoa, whoa Hold on, bro, how do you know where that goes? By tomorrow the sink will be starting to glow Put the waste in the designated receptacle And clean your station off before you take off, yo

“Put the caps on the bottles?” Yeah, that’s right. “Wipe the tabletop off?” Yeah, that’s right. “Run the flask under water?” Yeah, that’s right. You cleaned up real nice, see, and nobody died
