Lab Safety

General Safety Rules 1. The lab is an area for serious work. 2. No horseplay or goofing around of any kind allowed in the lab. 3. No sitting on lab tables. 4. Be prepared to work when you arrive at the laboratory. If instructed to do so by your teacher, familiarize yourself with the lab procedures before beginning the lab.

General Safety Rules 5. Perform only those lab activities assigned by your teacher. Never do anything in the laboratory that is not called for in the laboratory procedure or by your teacher. 6. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times. Only lab handouts and notebooks should be brought to the work areas. Other books, purses, backpacks etc. should be left at your desk.

General Safety Rules 7. Food or drink are NOT allowed in the lab unless specifically approved by your teacher.

General Safety Rules 8. Clothing should be appropriate for working in the lab. Jackets, ties and other loose garments should be removed. Long sleeves should be rolled up or secured in some manner.

General Safety Rules 9. Long hair should be tied back or covered, especially in the vicinity of an open flame. 10. Follow all instructions, both written and oral, carefully. 11. Transitions should be done quietly, and efficiently.

General Safety Rules 12. A lab apron and safety goggles should always be worn in the lab. 13. Set up apparatus as described in the lab instructions or by your teacher. Never use makeshift arrangements.

General Safety Rules 14. Always use the prescribed instrument (tongs, test-tube holder, forceps, etc.) for handling apparatus or equipment. 15. Keep all combustible materials away from open flames. 16. Never touch or taste any substance in the lab unless instructed to do so by your teacher.

General Safety Rules 17. Never put your face near the mouth of a container that is holding chemicals. 18. When testing for odors, use a wafting motion to direct the odors to your nose. Never smell any chemical unless instructed to do so.

General Safety Rules 19. Any activity involving harmful vapors should be conducted in the fume hood. 20. Dispose of waste materials as instructed by your teacher.

General Safety Rules 21. Clean up spills immediately. 22. Clean and wipe dry all work surfaces at the end of class. Wash your hands thoroughly. 23. Know the location of emergency equipment (eye wash, fire extinguisher, shower, etc.) and how to use them. 24. Report all accidents to your teacher immediately.

Chemical & Glassware Safety

Chemical Safety 25. Read and double-check labels on reagent bottles before removing any reagent. Take only as much reagent as reagent as you need. 26. Do not return unused reagent to stock bottles. Share! 27. When transferring chemical reagents from one container to another, hold the containers out away from your body.

Chemical Safety 28. When mixing an acid and water, always add the acid to the water. 29. Avoid touching chemicals with your hands. If chemicals do come in contact with your hands, wash them immediately.

Glassware Safety 30. Glass tubing, especially long pieces, should be carried in a vertical position to minimize the likelihood of breakage and to avoid stabbing anyone.

Glassware Safety 31. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass. Dispose of the glass as directed by your teacher. 32. Never use chipped or cracked glassware.

Lab Safety Rules 33. Other rules may be added as needed to ensure safety for all students.

First Aid

First Aid Tell your teacher about ANY and ALL injuries, no matter how small they may appear to be.

First Aid Injury: Burns To Do: Immediately flush with cold water until burning sensation is lessened.

First Aid Injury: Cuts, bruises To Do: Do not touch an open wound without safety gloves. Pressing directly on minor cuts will stop bleeding in a few minutes. Apply cold compress to bruises to reduce swelling.

First Aid Injury: The eyes To Do: Use the eyewash to flush eyes immediately for minutes. If a foreign object is lodged in the eye, do not allow the eye to be rubbed.

First Aid Injury: Spills on the skin To Do: Flush with large quantities of water. For acid spills, apply baking soda solution. For base spills, apply vinegar or boric acid. In VERY rare instances the shower may be used. NEVER use the shower without permission. You will be held financially responsible for all damages if you are found to have used the shower without permission.

Lastly Breakage of glassware and equipment due to horseplay or negligence, will result in financial reimbursement to OLM for the replacement cost of materials.
