Welcome to Third Grade!

Goals for Third Grade  To develop the academic and social skills needed to progress to fourth grade.  Be an active learner in a supportive and fun classroom environment.  Make new friends and discover new interests.

Class Subjects  The subjects we cover during third grade are:  Spalding  English & Language Arts in line with Common Core Standards  Writing & Oral Recitations  Saxon Math & Common Core Standards  Science  Social Studies

Spalding  Cursive writing is expected in third grade  We will practice for the first few weeks of the year; after that, everything is to be written in cursive.  We will enter 30 words in our Spalding notebook each week.  We will test on these 30 words the following Thursday.

Reading  Common Core Standards  Open Court  Lit Sets  Quarterly Book Reports  AR/SSR time

Writing & Oral Recitations  ELA Common Core Standards using 6+1 Traits  AIMS Preparation  2 Poetry Recitations each quarter

Math  Saxon 4/5 Math Book & Common Core Standards  Practice Tests, Final Tests, & Investigations  Timed fact tests  100 problems, 3:30 secs.

Science  Harcourt  Science Fair!  Animal Reports

Social Studies  Harcourt  Geography & Map Skills  Travel Buddies!

Specials  Library  Music  P.E.  Computer Lab

Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.  Our class rules are:  Be respectful and responsible.  Be an attentive listener.  Grade Level expectations are:  Be organized and follow directions.  Be prepared.

Homework  Homework will be assigned every night, Monday thru Thursday.  Spelling  Math Lesson  One of the following skills:  Grammar/Reading Comprehension/Writing  Reading for 20 minutes  Your homework packet is due the following morning.  Incomplete homework has a consequence and can affect the overall homework grade.

Tardiness  School starts at 8:10 A.M.  We set the stage for our day as soon as we arrive, please be here on time!  The first bell rings at 8:05; if you aren’t in the classroom by the time the second bell rings, please make sure you sign in at the school office and get a tardy pass before coming to class.
