1 BTS330 Vision and Scope

√ Determine a vision for the business √ Create initial use-case model showing key actors and use cases by business area Benefits of doing this: Provides a good overview of the functionality of the system Complexity has been managed by reflecting functional areas Next Steps Vision and scope statements for the product under development

Product Vision and Scope Product Vision Scope for Business Area 1 Scope for Business Area 2 And so on… These could be different releases Start with the overall product vision statement

Documenting Vision This is the vision for the software system under development For.. (target)..who.. (need).. the.. (product).. is.. (category).. that.. (key benefit).. unlike.. (current or competitor).. our product.. (advantages)

Documenting Scope This is the scope for the software system under development Defines the proposed solution. Can itemize, as well, what the system will not include Provides realistic expectations for the stakeholders

Documenting Scope Establishes the boundary and connections between the system we are developing and everything else (in the universe) Microsoft Software Requirements Use a context diagram to show terminators outside the system that interface to it in some way, as well as data, control and the flows between the terminators and the system

Documenting Scope Sample context diagrams: y/ar-introocdv1/index.html y/ar-introocdv1/index.html xt_diagram xt_diagram eRequirementsExample.htm eRequirementsExample.htm

Documenting Scope Context Diagram Figure 5-3 Microsoft Software Requirements 2 nd Edition

Vision and Scope Product Vision Scope for Business Area 1 Scope for Business Area 2 And so on… These might be different releases Next describe the scope for each of these business areas

Documenting Vision For each business area, state it’s vision For.. (target)..who.. (need).. the.. (product).. is.. (category).. that.. (key benefit).. unlike.. (current or competitor).. our product.. (advantages) Text, (p.85)

Documenting Scope For each business area, state it’s scope In summary form, describe: Features Key Stakeholders Operating Environment

Scope: Features Major Features Describe functionality of each feature (include as much as you know!) E.g. Payroll Creation: The payroll creation feature will allow the client to set up and execute a regularly scheduled process to calculate employee wages owing for a specific time period, to make appropriate deductions, and to generate an electronic deposit to each employee’s bank account. A pay slip will also be printed for each employee.

Scope: Operating Environment Operating Environment, if appropriate Physical environment Distribution? Locations? Availability/Performance/Integrity requirements i.e. order payment is processed online using a secure 3 rd party payment processing application

Sample Vision and Scope Statements Inventory Management Vision Statement In order to provide fresh food in a proficient manner, the Inventory Management module provides an efficient method to track and maintain the food and packaging inventory status. The module also keeps track of special handling instructions such as expiry date and storage temperature requirements. Scope This module provides food and packaging inventory tracking, stock level threshold tracking, menu cataloging and expiry date tracking. The system assumes that the mechanism of replenishing stock is already in place. Features This module provides the following features: Inventory tracking Add, edit, delete food items Add, edit, delete menu items Add, edit, delete packaging items Generate low stock level report Expiry date tracking Doesn’t use exact vision statement syntax

Sample Vision and Scope Statements Shipping Department Vision Statement For the staff and manager of the shipping department who need a system to keep track of all the orders and invoices electronically, this software will provide the ability to manage all the incoming orders, drop off orders to specified locations and create an invoice or receipt with order number on it. This software provides detailed client information. Unlike the current, paper based work, shipping orders are done electronically in a secure environment. Scope The Elfin shipping is part of Elfin System. It will allow the shipping staff to keep track of all the orders digitally. Elfin Software maintains detailed information about their clients and manages the shipping of orders. Shipping Department Module Feature Electronic Shipping filling This feature allows filling out order and storing all the information electronically.
