Around a 10% of the planet population is disabled In Spain, people, a 9% of the population Disability demographics People with disabilities in Spain [INE, 2000] < 6 From 6 to 15 From 16 to 44 From 45 to 64 From 65 to 84 > 85

Raising dependency 4,59% 32,21% Between 6 and 64Older than 64 [INE, 2000] Disability rates rise with age An aging Europe: By 2050, a 40% of European population will be older than 65

Independent Living means that we demand the same choices and control in our every-day lives that our non-disabled brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends take for granted. We want to grow up in our families, go to the neighborhood school, use the same bus as our neighbors, work in jobs that are in line with our education and interests, and start families of our own Adolf Ratzka, Nothing about us without us, David Werner, 1998 [Independent Living] Independent Living

Raising dependency Where do elderly people want to live? At home (78,8%) With relatives (14%) In an institution (2,5%) [SESPAS, 2004] What is the most beneficial situation? Institution residents have many much more serious health problems than elderly people who live independently, and they have much less access to the resources that would allow them to continue living independently with such health problems. [SCPON, 1994]

Independent living implies performing Daily Living Activities (DLA) : –Personal care: Waking up and going to bed, feeding, bathing, going to the toilette –Home tasks: Cooking, shopping, cleaning –Communication: Picking up the phone, Opening the door when the bell is ringing, etc. –Entertainment: Listening to music, watching the TV –Safety: Facing emergency situations Most housing is designed for young, active and mobile people In Spain, more than one half of people with disabilities between 6 y 64 (70% for 65+) face problems when performing daily living activities (DLA). Independent Living and Autonomy at Home [INE, 2000]

Personal asistance and Independent Living Personal Assistance is based in services provided by persons who help people with disability to perform activities. For instance, those which can not be performed only with technological solutions Personal Assistance Accessibility (Design for All + AT) += Requirements for Personal autonomy
