Opening Assignment  Take a card from the basket. When I say “go” find your match in the class. (your terms go together )  You will interview that person and then when everyone is done, you will introduce them to the class.

Name cards  I am a visual learner and will learn your names quicker if I can see your name next to you.  We will use the card stock to make name cards that I want you to put out in front of you for the first week.  Also, please put your name on one side of the popsicle sticks. I will use these to call on students and for activities throughout the school year.

Day 2 Opening Assignment  Put your name card on your desk please  List 2 reasons why procedures are so important.  **Mandatory meeting for all international students in room 401 today at 11:30am.

Paper Poppers  Use the directions to create a paper popper from the piece of newspaper I have given you.

Paper Popper procedure challenge  Using only your popper and your memory, put the steps of the procedure in order from 1 st to last.  How well do you remember what you did first, second, third, etc.?

Mrs. Shaw’s Syllabus  Let’s review my class syllabus, procedures, rules, etc. along with my website and setting up your notebook for my class.  Homework: Find my website and explore. Write down the name of the second unit we will study.

Day 3 Opening Assignment  Where would you find out what we are doing in class this Thursday?  Explain two procedures you need to follow in Mrs. Shaw’s class.

Lab Safety  ety+rap&mid=03E570860FE62F0D150803E570860F E62F0D1508&view=detail&FORM=VIRE1#view=d etail&mid=03E570860FE62F0D150803E570860FE62 F0D ety+rap&mid=03E570860FE62F0D150803E570860F E62F0D1508&view=detail&FORM=VIRE1#view=d etail&mid=03E570860FE62F0D150803E570860FE62 F0D1508  Listen to the rap and write down 5 science lab safety rules under the answer you wrote for the opening assignment.

16 Lab Safety Review Notes

17 General Safety Rules 1. Listen to or read instructions carefully before attempting to do anything. 2. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from chemicals, heated materials, or things that might be able to shatter. 3. Notify your teacher if any spills or accidents occur.

General Safety Rules continued.. 4.After handling chemicals, always wash your hands with soap and water. 5.During lab work, keep your hands away from your face. 6.Tie back long hair and roll up loose sleeves.

General Safety Rules continued.. 7. Never put anything into your mouth during a lab experiment. 8. NEVER mix chemicals unless directed to do so. 9.Never “horse around” or play practical jokes in the laboratory 10.Do not clean up broken glassware! Notify the teacher.

And finally..... CLEAN UP your lab area at the conclusion of the laboratory period. Labs are a privilege and should be treated as such.

Tomorrow is your first quiz!!  What will it cover?  IRCHS handbook rules and guidelines (dress code, tardies, absences, demerits.  Mrs. Shaw’s Syllabus – class rules, procedures, website etc.  Lab Safety Rules – listen to RAP

Student Survey  Please fill out the student survey so that I can get to know you and your learning style.  My goal is that ALL my students are successful in learning science in my class!

Day 3 Opening Assignment  Place your student survey in the correct class bin in the back of the room. THEN  Review your Syllabus for this class, your Student handbook located inside your IRCHS planner, and your lab safety notes from yesterday.

Class, Lab, and School Procedures Quiz

Where will you find the work you missed in class on the day you were absent? Question #6

Question 7 Can you eat and drink in Mrs. Shaw’s class? Explain

Question 8 What should you do if you are really struggling with understanding a difficult concept Mrs. Shaw is teaching?

Lab Safety Question 9 – 12: List four lab safety rules you think are the MOST important. When you are finished turn your paper in to the bins in the back of the class.

Learning Styles Survey What type of learner are you? Visual, Auditory, or Tactile / Kinesthetic

Learning Styles Key Points  Own who you are and how you learn best  Be proactive – if you are not understanding a concept take responsibility and do your own research to understand it using visual, auditory, or kinesthetic resources.  Be courteous...some people need more explanation and time than others to get a concept. Don’t be disrespectful when this happens.  If you are not being challenged in my class I want to know it!! Learning can be fun and challenging at the same time...this is my goal for my classes so don’t feel like you will hurt my feelings if you need more rigor.

Next week  We will start next week with a semester pretest to help me collect data on what you are already proficient in and what you need the most help with. It will be entered in eSembler with a Zero weight so it will not count.  After the pretest we will start notes on Unit 1 – the Nature and Process of Scientific Investigations so be sure you have your notebook ready to go.
