MOCOMOTION COURSE TOOLS An Introduction Rhonda Dynes & Craig Cooke

MoCoMotion Course Tools Three Main Ways to Create a Course Web Site Using MoCoMotion Course Tools Using a Personal Web Site Using either WebCT or FirstClass (FRED)

MoCoMotion Course Tools ADVANTAGES Uses a familiar platform Course site members are automatically populated All announcements are posted on the Welcome Tab of MoCoMotion ing one or all students is possible Learning curve is minimal and no special software is required.

MoCoMotion Course Tools ADVANTAGES Cont’d Different components include: Photos, news, calendar, chat, message board, links, files, announcements, and Site administration can be delegated Members can be added or deleted manually Easy to use and yet satisfies most faculty requirements. Increased communication between students and faculty increases student satisfaction.

MoCoMotion Course Tools DISADVANTAGES Time required to set-up the web site The site once created can not be brought forward to the next term. System does not leave much ability to change overall set-up or appearance File sharing is restricted by quotas.

Personal Web Site ADVANTAGES The Web Site can be as unique as you are from just the very basic to quite elaborate. The site once created can be easily brought forward to the next term. File size is rarely a problem.

Personal Web Site DISADVANTAGES Time and skill required to set-up The site must be hosted on a server and the college is becoming quite restrictive on the look of these sites. No direct functionality. Students must go to your site to read announcements.

WebCT and FirstClass (FRED) ADVANTAGES Combines ease of set-up with increased functionality. Has many more advanced features such as grading and on-line testing. Integrated announcements and etc. Students will soon be able to get to the site through the MoCoMotion log-in. Courses migrate easily to the next term.

WebCT and FirstClass (FRED) DISADVANTAGES More powerful and complex translates into a larger time investment to learn the system. System may be too complex for faculty members needs. System may never be as well integrated into MoCoMotion as Course Tools.

In Summary Personal Web Sites – these sites are likely to become more restricted by the college and thus less common in the future. Course Tools – may be a good choice for some faculty members, and those just starting out with an LMS. WebCT and FirstClass (FRED) – ideal for power users and those who are restricted by Course Tools.
