Overview of Forest Product Output including Non-Forest Products 2012 FIA User Group Meeting Baltimore, MD March 7-8,

Objectives Update on the nationalization of Timber Products Output/Resource Use activities Incorporation of non-timber products into the effort Creation of a National FIA Group to for Forest Products

Update on the Nationalization of Timber Products Output/Resource Use Activities Group coordinated by Chris Woodall (NRS) has been functioning for the past 3 or so years to Nationalize TPO information Includes representatives from all FIA group involved in TPO data collection Progress has been made but has not progressed as quickly as expected

Incorporation of non-timber products into the effort Formalized with the addition of Jim Chamberlain as a research scientist within the SRS FIA unit A research project was initiated last year by Jim with cooperators from Virginia Tech that would develop a canvass system for non-wood forest products that would be comparable with the current TPO data collection

Incorporation of non-timber products into the effort

Incorporation of non-timber products into the effort

National FIA Group to for Forest Products Mission: To conduct relevant research that helps define, quantify, and understand the social and economic dimensions of wood and non-wood usage from US forests in order to promote sustainable forest management that meets the current and future needs of landowners, communities, and society. In addition, to support the National FIA Program on new and emerging issues while assisting with the regional FIA TPO programs in maintaining the needs of the baseline TPO information needs.

National FIA Group to for Forest Products Objectives: Coordinate/maintain a national approach and procedures for data collection, processing, reporting, and on-line data query tools on forest products use. Develop/produce national-level reports on the use of forest products and provide this information for other national-level reporting activities (RPA). Develop the background research and the tools for the regional FIA TPO programs to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of data collection. Develop the background research and the tools for the regional FIA TPO programs to collect the wood usage for emerging products. Develop the methods and survey techniques on the production for non- timber forest products and possibly secondary wood products manufacturing. Explore strategic partnerships with US DOE, Census Bureau, trade organizations representing various timber and non-timber forest products and include working collaboratively with other USDA Forest Service researchers.

National FIA Group to for Forest Products Organization/Structure: Located in Blacksburg, VA in SRS facilities on Virginia Tech. Campus Administratively part of SRS FIA Led by Research Scientist – hired by early 2013? Small staff – Jim Chamberlain plus 1 addition research scientist and research technician Research completed cooperatively with other FIA units, USDA FS scientists, and university scientists including through graduate students/post-docs Will start slow and “ramp-up” over time

Conclusions Progress has been made on the Nationalization of TPO information; more needs to be done and will be done in the next year Non-timber forest products is now part of the FIA Program with the addition of Jim Chamberlain as a research scientist in SRS FIA Early stages of initiating a National Group for Forest Products to support forest products activities within the FIA Program
