BULLY definition b Webster’s Dictionary defines bullying as: A person who hurts or frightens those who are smaller and weaker.A person who hurts or frightens those who are smaller and weaker.

What is Cyber-bullying? b Someone says something that makes you upset or teases you in a hurtful way on the Internet b One child or a group of children talk about something that someone said on a computer about you and it makes you feel bad. b Someone uses a computer to say something that scares you like: –They are going to try to find where you live or go to school –They are going to hurt you, your family or friends –They will take something that belongs to you or damage your property b Someone from school is using the Internet to get other people to tease you or to not be your friend. b Someone takes a picture or movie of you with their phone without your permission.

Why is cyber-bullying bad? b When you say mean things about people, in-person or on the computer, it hurts. b You are being used by someone else if you join in cyber-bullying. b Cyber-bullies and their friends often end up being bullied themselves. EFFECTS OF BULLYING b More than 160,000 students do not go to school each day because they fear being bullied. - National Education Association, National Association of School Psychologists

What to do if you are bullied b Tell the bully how they are making you feel. b Look right at the bully and tell them that they are bullying you. Tell them firmly that you don’t like it and that they need to stop, then walk away.Tell them firmly that you don’t like it and that they need to stop, then walk away. b If they will not stop, tell a teacher or an adult.

OK, SO HOW CAN I HELP SOMEONE ELSE? b BULLYING STARTS AND STOPS WITH YOU!! b If you see another student being hurt by a bully or bullies, tell someone. Teachers, counselors, principals, adults and parents are all willing to listen and help.Teachers, counselors, principals, adults and parents are all willing to listen and help. b When you hear words that hurt, try to change the subject to something more positive b Say something nice to the person being bullied. Helping someone else feel good about themselves only makes you feel better! b Include someone who is left out in what you are doing b DO NOT LAUGH OR join in.

Tattling versus Telling b It is important to know the difference between telling and tattling. Students do not want to be known as “tattle-tales,” but if what someone is doing hurts, scares, or puts another person in danger, an adult must be told right away. TRUE OR FALSE? A kid who gets teased and bullied knows we’re just kidding around. Even if it does hurt his feelings right now, he’ll get over it. FALSE. Bullying is kind of like pounding a nail into a board. You can take the nail out, but the hole is still there. You can even use some kind of putty to fill the hole up. The bottom line is that piece of wood will never be quite the same again. People who have been bullied carry those scars, big or small, forever.

Finally… b Do you think you have bullied someone? STOP…starting today. b Most schools have rules about not bullying others, and if you break the rules you might be suspended from school. At the very least, your parents will be calledAt the very least, your parents will be called
