The Internet

A Little About Me I’m a UNM graduate student As well as an UNM alumni and UNM employee Born and raised in Albuquerque I have a house and 2 dogs!

Practice Using the Internet Safely Strangers exist online and not just in public face-to- face. People are not always who they say they are online. If it is too good to be true, then it probably is!

Practice Using the Internet Safely Be careful sharing personal information online. Remember viruses exist online through s, websites, downloads, and web links. Don’t use the internet to bully other people.

Practice Using the Internet Safely Check with parents before downloading or installing anything on computer. Help your family members learn more about the internet. Use the internet with caution, it is a great resource, but we must be careful

Practice Using the Internet Safely Be aware of people nearby who are eavesdropping on your computer usage. Keep wireless networks password protected. Remember what you do online is an extension of yourself. Behave the same way you would in person.

Why Use Passwords? What are some things you have passwords for? When have you decided not to use a password on something? Give me an example of a time you didn’t use a password and it came back to bite you?

Passwords Don’t use a password that is easy to guess! Don’t use any personal information in your password! Don’t use a word in the dictionary as your password!

Passwords Don’t share your passwords except with a parent or guardian. Do use combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols. Make the password at least 8 characters long. For password hint questions make them tough!

Steganography What in the world is steganography? Is it the study of the Stegosaurus dinosaur?

Steganography People now will hide secret messages within files on the computer

Steganography Think of it is like having a secret room with information behind a bookcase rotating door.

Vigenere Cipher Giovan Battista Bellaso is credited with the introduction of the method all the way back in Blaise de Vigenere later received credit in the 19 th century and we now know this method as the Vigenere Cipher.

Vigenere Cipher We take plaintext and with a keyword we cipher that original word into ciphertext. A=1, Now a keyword may have to repeat if the keyword is shorter than the plaintext.

Vigenere Cipher

Here is a quick example: Plaintext: CABIN Keyword: BEEBE (See I had to begin to repeat the keyword and add the letters “BE” again because the keyword of “BEE” was shorter than the plaintext of “CABIN”) Ciphertext: EEFJR Another example: Plaintext: WAND Keyword: BEST Ciphertext: XEFW Your turn: Plaintext: POTTER KEYWORD: SIRIUS Ciphertext: ???
