Canadian Statistics Lentils Peas Beans Chickpeas Good Morning Thank you to the Cicils Board and my fellow Colleges for this opportunity to present the Canadian Statistics to you. Thank you Minister Stewart for coming it is both an honor and a pleasure to have you here recognizing the importance of the pulse industry to Saskatchewan, and helping to convey to our customers the importance they have in delivering that value. We will begin by looking at lentils, followed by peas, and then dry beans. In our discussions we will also look at current weather and forecasts for the upcoming crop year in Canada.

Lentils Large Green - Laird type – 30 - 40 % of market Medium Green - Richlea Type – 2-5% of market Small Green - Eston Type – 8 – 11% of market Small Red Lentils – 35 – 45 % of market Extra Small Red (Robin type) – 9 – 10 % Other Classes - less than 1%

Lentils – are primarily produced In Saskatchewan. Small bids of production occur in Manitoba and Alberta

Lentil Production 000’s Mts

Lentil Exports Have remained stable between 810,000 Mts to 850,000 Mts over the past 3 years and are forecasted to be in this range for 2009 / 10 Crop year Demand shifting regions, but overall quantity is not shifting Pricing has increased but the overall demand the Canadian Lentils has remained stable

With the second largest lentil on recorded being planted … the next thought is can canada really sell that many lentils next year ? And what happened to the large crop from last year.? The crop of this past season will be virtually sold out by the end of this crop year. Something we have been telling our customers since December 2008. Canada will run out of lentils. And we have . The crop this year had it’s normal demands plus the added demands for goods from regions and countries normally supplied by Turkey, Syria, and Australia to name a few. As well as the continued ban on exports from India. So for much of this crop year. Canada was one of the main options to purchase lentils from. And it appears it will remain such until new supplies from either Turkey or potentially the US enter the market. 2008/2009 crop European - Stable The med Turkey – Up 565% South American Lower by 50% Pacifc Rim Lower by about 20% Total Arab / Africa Same as last year

Key things to Watch… Production coming from other regions. Weather. From now till late August most markets are highly sensitive to weather Expect more volatility in the markets. In currency. In ocean Freights. In costs Whiplash effect is generally worse than the initial crash. Be happy you are in the food business as people will always eat. We only help discover at what price.

New Features 97 Degree Drop The New Fahrenheit roller coaster at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania features a 97 degree drop at the beginning. That's 7 degrees past vertical (see picture: right side, where the track curves back in). At the bottom of the drop riders experience 4 G's and then puke and/or passout. The two minute ride is being billed as the steepest and most severe in the United States and the coaster just opened on May 24th.
