* The Moscow Kremlin (or simply “The Kremlin”) is a government complex in the heart of Moscow, Russia.

Gorbachev Eases Cold War Tensions Mikhail Gorbachev reformed the USSR. – Glasnost (“openness”) – more relaxed power. – Perestroika – economic reform. USSR was still Communist, but had some democratic qualities. Result: Eventual breakup of the Soviet Union.

Activity #1 Read Collapse of the Soviet Empire – Write a one paragraph summary analyzing why the Soviet Union came to an end.

Collapse of the Soviet Union Gorbachev gave more personal freedoms to the people of the soviet Union. People were now allowed to criticize the government (Glasnost). Soviet Union relaxed its power. Many small nations behind the Iron Curtain demanded their independence (15 nations gained their independence in 1991). Ronald Reagan's speech to Mikhail Gorbachev The Berlin Wall Comes Down THE SOVIET UNION IS BROKEN UP!

Activity #2 We will watch a video of The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss being read aloud Follow along! Jot down anything you find interesting, troublesome, or feel strongly about. Riverside Reads "The Butter Battle Book" by Dr. Seuss: The Butter Battle Book read along The Butter Battle Book read along Published in 1984

What is the story really about? The Butter Battle Book tells the story of a land where two hostile cultures, the Yooks and the Zooks, live on opposite sides of a long curving wall, fairly similar to the Berlin Wall. The Yooks wear blue clothes; the Zooks wear orange. The main dispute between the two cultures is that the Yooks eat their bread with the butter-side up, while the Zooks eat their bread with the butter-side down. The conflict between the two sides leads to an arms race, each competing to make bigger and better weapons to outdo the other, which results in the threat of mutual destruction.

Summary 1.Complete the Dr. Seuss worksheet with a partner. 2.Dr. Seuss leaves the conclusion of the story up in the air…. What ends up happening in real life? Explain.
