Seed Projects on Movement Analysis Jan 2008

Background PE Curriculum and Assessment Guide (Secondary 4 – 6) New topics for Part III: Movement Analysis a. Forces and movement b. Types of movements c. Steps and guidelines for performance analysis

Learning and teaching strategies (1) A continuum of teaching approaches Direct Teaching Indirect Teaching Direct instruction EnquiryKnowledge co- construction Issue- enquiry Scientific- inquiry

Learning and teaching strategies (2) Linkage between theory and physical skills (integrated approach): to integrate and apply theories in real-life situations

2005/06 - “ Introducing Biomechanics at Senior Secondary ” Focus: How to improve student learning by integrating biomechanics concepts in physical activities? Strategy: Direct teaching before application of knowledge in practical activities Trial activities School AAthletics with MVA student project learning biomechanics could motivate learning students without prior knowledge of physics might find difficulties in understanding biomechanics concepts catering for learner diversity was of paramount importance experience sharing would be a great help for teachers School BTennis & Crouch Start School CTai Chi Chuen

2006/07 - “ Developing Effective Strategies for Learning and Teaching Biomechanics at Senior Secondary Level ” Focuses: Do students learn better? Do students favour the integrated approach in learning? Strategy: Direct teaching before application of knowledge in practical activities Trial activities School ABowling End-of-module written test reflected that a considerable amount of students showed a better understanding of the movement concepts introduced in the lectures Students found biomechanics concepts useful in skill improvement, but they did not favour learning the concepts as they were not HKCEE PE candidates School BHandball with MVA 1 (school team) Handball with MVA 2 (school team)

2007/08 – “ Developing Effective Strategies for Learning and Teaching Movement Analysis at Senior Secondary ” Focuses: Examine the applicability of physical experience in the learning process Develop steps and guidelines for performance analysis in physical activities Kolb (1988) proposed a four-stage model of learning by doing: Concrete experience Reflective observation Abstract conceptualisation Active experimentation Strategy: students reflect on own experiences before direct teaching Trial activities so far School A HKCEE PE questions in Athletics MVA They seemed to be interested in biomechanics concepts in their learning Students were introduced the software

Summary of projects in three years YearFocusesFindings How to improve learning by integrating biomechanics concepts in physical activities Motivate learning Cater for learner difference Did students learn better? Did students favour the integration approach? Yes Reflection and own experience before acquisition of concepts in learning Steps in performance analysis from the angle of movement analysis Yet to confirm
