VIRTUAL MUSEUM OF EGYPT Room 2 Room 3 Room 4 Room 1 CURATOR INFORMATION Name of Museum There are enough stone blocks in the Great Pyramid to make a wall around the country of France. The Great Pyramids were made of limestone and had burial sites inside them called the King’s and Queen’s chambers. The Great Pyramids of Giza were built from about 2600 to 2500 BC but the largest pyramid, Khufu’s, was built from about 2551 to 2528 BC. The pharaoh watched the peasants build and the artisans design the pyramid to the west of the Nile River outside Cairo. The technology of the Great Pyramids proved that ancient Egypt was an important civilization. Introduction Back to Room 1

VIRTUAL MUSEUM OF EGYPT Room 2 Room 3 Room 4 Room 1 CURATOR INFORMATION Name of Museum The Great Pyramid proves that Egypt is an important civilization because of technology. Some basic information about the Great pyramid is that it was built with limestone, granite, and other stones. The Great Pyramid is 550,000 square feet wide, weighs 6.5 million tons, and has 2.3 million stone blocks. Before the Egyptians could start building they had to carry stone blocks from quarries and the stones weighed 2.5 tons and some even weighed five times that much. The Egyptians could have used a boat, let the stone float when the Nile flooded, or used a sled-like structure and make the ground slippery with liquid to transport the stones. When they got the stone blocks to the site the Egyptians then had to lift the stones up on to the pyramid and some stones could have weighed over ten tons. The stone blocks were lifted with ropes, wooden levers or ramps that spiraled around the pyramid and were made slick with mud or water. Although experts don't know exactly how the Egyptians built the pyramid it still proves that Egypt was an important civilization. Body Paragraph Back to Room 2
