Part 3: Pentecost changed Everything! The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Acts 1:4: “On one occasion, while Jesus was eating with them, He gave them this command; ‘…Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift My Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptised with water, but in a few days, you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’”

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. After He had said this, He was taken up before their very eyes and a cloud hid Him from their sight.”

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Acts 2:1-4 – The Day of Pentecost “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Acts 8:14-17 – The People of Samaria “When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God (became Christians), they sent Peter and John to them. And when they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon them. They had simply been baptised into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.”

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Acts 10: The Household of Cornelius “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all those who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.”

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Acts 19:6 – The First Christians at Ephesus “When Paul placed his hand on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.”

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Interchangeable Expressions Being baptised in the Holy Spirit (Acts1:5; 11:16) Receiving a promise (Acts 1:4; 2:39) Receiving a gift (Acts 1:4; 2:38; 8:18) Receiving power to be witnesses (Act 1:8) Receiving the Holy Spirit or the gift of the Holy Spirit Being filled with the Spirit (Acts 2:4) Having the Spirit come ON or poured out ON (Acts 10:44-46) All refer to same experience!

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? These are Interchangeable Expressions Being baptised in the Holy Spirit (Acts1:5; 11:16) Receiving a promise (Acts 1:4; 2:39) Receiving a gift (Acts 1:4; 2:38; 8:18) Receiving power to be witnesses (Act 1:8) Receiving the Holy Spirit or the gift of the Holy Spirit Being filled with the Spirit (Acts 2:4) Having the Spirit come ON or poured out ON (Acts 10:44-46) All refer to same experience! PENTECOST CHANGED EVERYTHING!

Pentecost changed everything! 1) Pentecost changed God’s people who then changed the world! “On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.” John 20:19-20

Pentecost changed everything! From cowering weaklings to bold ambassadors! “Men of Israel, hear these words… ‘ this Jesus, [d] delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.d Acts 2:23

Pentecost changed everything! 2) Pentecost ushered in Gods long-awaited promise – bringing a change to the order of things. Joseph (Genesis 41:38), Moses and the 70 elders (Number 11:25), Joshua (Deuteronomy 34:9), Saul (1 Samuel 10:10), David (1 Samuel 16:13), Gideon (Judges 6:34), Samson (Judges 14:6). The prophets (There are many others) SAME HOLY SPIRIT / SAME POWER / SAME GIFTS in operation - as at Pentecost!

Pentecost changed everything! Joel 2:28-29 “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

Pentecost changed everything! Acts 2:39: “39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Pentecost changed everything! 3) Pentecost has changed God’s people! Ushered in God’s promise! Changed the order of things… but has it changed you?

Pentecost changed everything! Luke 11:9-13 “And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Pentecost changed everything! Whether we receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit or not comes down to us answering 2 questions honestly: 1) Do we really believe that God means what He says? 2) How much do we want it?

Part 3: Pentecost changed Everything! The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
