HAZING What is it? What can I do?

Journal What is the definition of hazing? Have you heard any horror stories about people being hazed? If you were put in a situation where you may be hazed in order to join a group, what do you think your HONEST reaction would be?

Hazing Definition Hazing includes any humiliating or dangerous activity expected of a student in order to join a group, regardless of that students willingness to participate.

In general, HAZING is: Activities involving an unreasonable risk of physical harm, including paddling, beating, whipping, branding, electric shock, sleep deprivation, exposure to weather, placement of harmful substances on the body, and participation in physically dangerous activities.

More Hazing: Activities involving the consumption of alcohol, drugs, tobacco products, or any other food, liquid, or other substance that subject the student to an unreasonable risk of physical harm.

More Hazing: Activities involving actions of a sexual nature or the simulation of actions of a sexual nature.

More Hazing: Activities that subject a student to an extreme and unreasonable level of embarrassment, shame, or humiliation, or which create a hostile, abusive, and intimidating environment for the student.

More Hazing: Activities involving any violation of federal, state, and local law, or any violation of school policies and regulations.

What if I have been hazed? Communicate your displeasure to the person initiating the hazing activity. Report the incident to your sponsor, coach, R.A., president of your organization, or local authorities.

Prevention: Take it seriously and discuss it with everyone Make sure you understand what activities are considered to be hazing. Recognize that a willingness to participate on the part of the hazing recipients does not absolve offending parties of responsibility. Do not dismiss acts that are considered to be traditions or initiations. Model respect and be conscious of others.

Assignment: Due Wednesday, October 8 Look on the internet and find an article on the following: –One incident that has happened to H.S. students that have hazed –One incident that has happened to College students that have hazed
