What is Netball? Netball is a game played by 2 teams with 7 players on each team. The game is based on throwing and catching. The object is to score goals within a defined area, by throwing a ball into a ring (about 10 foot high) post.

History In England in 1901 the first set of rules were published and netball officially came into existence in that country. Not long after the game travelled to other countries. Netball got the idea from basketball. Australia's first international match was played in 1938 against New Zealand. With Australia defeating New Zealand

Positions A netball team is made up of 7 players. Each player has a nominated position and role, and may only be permitted into certain areas of the court. If a player enters a zone which they are restricted from then they are deemed 'offside'. The positions in a netball team are as follows: GS - Goal Shooter - Can move anywhere within the attacking third of the court, but cannot leave it. GA - Goal Attack - Can move anywhere within the attacking third and the center third of the court. WA- Wing Attack - Can move within the attacking third and center third, with the exception of the shooting circle. C - Centre - Can move anywhere across the court, apart from either of the shooting circles. WD - Wing Defense - Can move within the center third and the defensive third, with the exception of the shooting circle. GD - Goal Defense - Can move anywhere within the attacking third and the center third of the court. GK - Goal Keeper - Can move anywhere within the defensive third of the court, but cannot leave it. Only the 'Goal Shooter' and 'Goal Attack' of a team are allowed to score directly, and can only do so when they are in the oppositions goal circle.

Basic Rules The basic rules of Netball. You cannot travel with the ball. There are only 7 players on court from each team at all times unless a player has been sent off by the referee. You cannot snatch or hit the ball out of a players hands. This is called contact. You must stand beside the player until the ball has left the players hands. When defending the ball, you must stand 3 feet away from the person with the ball. Players cannot hold the ball for more than 3 seconds. This includes throwing it the air, no-one else touches it and you catch it again. Or bouncing the ball. Players are not allowed to move into the areas that they are not designated to. When the defense in the circle are called up by the referee, they have to stand beside the shooter. The shooter has the decision of shooting the ball or passing the ball. When the ball goes out of court, the team who last touched the ball hands the ball over to the opposing team. They have 3 seconds to stand outside of the court at the line where it went out and pass the ball.
