About basketball Basketball is a game in which two teams of five players each try to score goals by throwing a large ball through a circular net fixed to a metal hoop at each end of the court.

Basketball history Basketball was invented in America by a teacher named James Naismith. He hung a basketball from the balcony of the gym. Each time the ball went into the basket, someone had to climb a ladder to get it out. Later, the basketball was changed into a metal basket. In 1906, the metal hoop was first used. The early form of the hoop had a net bag with no hole in it for the ball to fall through. Instead, there was a rope tied to the bag. When the rope was pulled, the ball would jump out. Finally, the modern form was developed.
