Ideas From the Leadership Summit

Coaching for Success As a coach you ask the questions and the Coachee does the work What is coaching? – An ongoing discussion that clarifies a coach’s goal and creates action steps toward reaching those goals – A way of promoting self-reflection/ self discovery

Coaching 1.Coachee does most of the work 2.Focuses on asking questions – Keep questions short – Ask descriptive questions – Avoid “Why” questions – When you can give advice or opinions turn them into questions … “Well, what do you think about …” 3.Is action- oriented 4.Is future- oriented 5.Must support and challenge 6.Requires patience and listening skills 7.A coach cannot coach everyone on everything

Coaching is Not! Counseling Therapy Teaching Mentoring

Powerful Coaching Questions Getting Perspectives – What’s an entirely different way to see your situation? – How would others describe your performance? – How would others describe your potential? – What one personal change would result in the biggest benefit?

Powerful Coaching Questions Identifying Resources – What additional resources would be the most helpful? – How might you use your greatest strengths everyday? – What thoughts and habits no longer serve you well?

Powerful Coaching Questions Initiating Change – What new skills will provide the biggest payoff? – What actions do you need to take but are avoiding? – What will be different this time? – What do you need to do so you will have no regrets?

Powerful Coaching Questions Commencing Action – Which difficult conversation needs to happen? – What is the most potent first step? – What short- term breakthroughs are necessary?

Powerful Coaching Questions Creating Accountability and Sustainabliity – What specific commitments have you made? – Do you trust yourself to follow through? – How will you maintain momentum? – What will you do when you encounter unexpected obstacles? – How will you ensure the changes are enduring?

G Goal – What is the issue on which you would like to work? – In the long term, what is your goal related to this issue ? – What is the time frame?

R Reality – What is happening now? – What are the opportunities? – What are the risks or obstacles?

O Options – What are different ways you could approach this issue? – What else could you do? – What would you do if you had no constraints(time, budget)? – Which of these appeals to you the most? Why?

W Will do – Which option will you choose – When precisely will you start and finish each action step? – How will you overcome your obstacles?

Get The People

Foundation Everything needs a strong foundation of leaders Executive Board – Highest level of CAC/ RFL volunteers Committee – Supports all the individual tasks of the event/ chapter Team Captains – Get teams together Participants – Raise the money

Succession Mentoring is Key Terms- we shouldn’t have one person do the same job all 4 years … that way we can have fresh ideas coming in Roles and Responsibilities – Each person should know what their role is and what is expected of them Social Agreements – a must so that you know how often you must keep in contact or will be contacted

Committee Recruitment The Executive Board- should be pulled from the current committee and should go through an application process Committee Members – should be pulled from various campus affiliations and will also have to go through an application process to hold committee chair positions, and everyone should be put in something they want to do The committee should be a mini campus

Get Alumni Alumni Mailing/ Newsletters – Student Features – Highlight a Survivor/ Caregivers Mini Relay on Alumni Weekend Elaborate Table and display Specific fundraisers Dinner/Gala event School spirit based evens for Alums

Faculty and Staff Can help with publicity Will make it a community effort Can have been/ are survivors and caregivers or may have benefited from ACS Classroom opportunities to announce relay Can promote volunteer hours Can give fundraising ideas

Recruiting Survivors and Caregivers Where? – Personal Contact – Posting Info at local hospitals – ACS Staff partner – Pharmacies … Posters with dates

Recruiting Survivors and Caregivers Recognize/ Get them involved – Holiday cards – Thank you cards – Survivor dinner (Both semesters) – Invite them to CAC events – Judge Contests – Calls to check up – Coaches vs. Cancer Invite them to games – Survivor Tent – Gift – Virtual Survivor – can’t attend, but still gets recognized
