The da Vinci Surgical System Sam Karnes BME 281
Intuitive Surgical Created the da Vinci system along with other robotic medical innovations Global leader in robotically assisted minimally invasive surgery, or laparoscopy
The da Vinci Allows surgeons to perform laparoscopic surgery with more precision and ease Composed of – Surgeon Console High Definition display 3D or 2D – Patient-Side Cart – EndoWrist Instruments – Vision System
Results 4 different exercises were performed by medical students with no surgical experience They performed each task with traditional laparoscopic techniques and the device The successful exercises resulted in – 9.5, 27.5, 60.5, and 51.0 seconds respectively for the da Vinci – 19.0, 64.0, 356.5, and seconds respectively for the traditional techniques
Advantages Surgical procedures are easier to perform with the device The device removes the strain on surgeons
Disadvantages The device costs around $2.2 million not including additions to the device The cost of surgery with the device > traditional laparoscopy Insurance companies only reimburse the amount for the traditional method
Future of the da Vinci System Full Insurance Coverage Make components more reproducible to ensure lower costs Produce more robotic systems from this design for alternative surgeries
