Welcome to the Year 6 Parents information evening.

So far… The Basics: Handwriting Work presentation Basic knowledge for each subject Classroom rules including behavioural and academic expectations. PE kits – Thursday (indoor) Friday (outdoor) Homework – every Friday due in Wednesday Spelling test and mental maths test - Monday

Overview of Year 6 Preparing for SATs in May. Preparation for Year 7. Equipping the children with life skills for the challenges ahead. Fostering independence, please help with this. Taking ownership and responsibility for their learning and organisation. Making wise choices. Lots of group work, developing presentation skills and speaking in front of an audience as well as working with others who have different learning styles.

Topics for the rest of the year Term 2 – What time is it? Geography – time travel, time zones, time travel Term 3 – Can we all live in harmony? History – Vikings and Anglo Saxons, 1066, settlements and English history Term 4 – Is the world a fair place? Geography/History – fair trade, India and comparing quality of living around the world Term 5 – How were we created? Science – evolution and inheritance Term 6 – What is music? History of music and how sound is made and travels. Music from different countries, cultures and time periods. End of year musical extravaganza

Literacy Small group working with Miss Langston in order to provide a more individualised teaching which will raise attainment. Planning is the same for all groups but obviously groups will be smaller. This term Book study – Street Child by Berlie Doherty Narrative writing – with the support of further book studies which allow the children to learn in a deeper way. Editing skills and improving skills Many opportunities to write! Journalistic writing – use Dr Crippen as inspiration Biographical writing – Victorian inventors that have influenced Weston.

SPAG This is taught as part of our daily English lesson. Spelling – regular and irregular spelling patterns – 20 word spelling test. Punctuation – punctuation marks ranging from basic., and -:; Grammar – proper nouns, verbs, adjectives …

Numeracy Small group working with Mr Turner and the rest of the year group working with their own teacher. Some consolidation of learn facts and methods and extension to move learning forward. Children will need to show written methods Problem solving and transference of skills and knowledge. Maths fact book - essential basic knowledge that will also provide a revision tool for SATS. Nearer SATS time – practise papers – children will bring these home – PLEASE go over these with them.

Year 6 BLOG / Search: Ashcombe Primary School Blog The Blog is designed to allow the children to continue their class work at home. It is a place where they can ask questions, make comments and share success.

Our requests… Homework – please foster independence but check up. This is an expectation in readiness for secondary school – sanctions for not completing it! If this is an issue homework club on a Monday after school 3.15 – 4.15 Reading – please encourage this even though they are older, sign reading record and ask questions about what they have read. Take an interest but always encourage independence – especially organisation.
