Presentation transcript:

*By the Early 1900s the United States had gained control of North America and settled from coast to coast. (Manifest Destiny) *Many Americans began to look at gaining lands overseas. (What if we export Manifest Destiny?)

IMPERIALISM- when strong nations gain political, economic, or military control over weaker nations. Everyone else is doing it!Everyone else is doing it! European and Asian countries had been practicing Imperialism for years. (Africa)

The discovery of diamonds and gold increased European interest in African colonization No country wanted to be left out (RACE IS ON!) To avoid war, ground rules were set in Berlin (1884) No African Representatives were present. Two rules for claiming land… (1) tell others of your claim (2) prove your country can control the area

3 Reasons that Americans Liked the Idea of Imperialism

1. Economic reasons Raw materials New Markets Sound familiar?

2. Military Reasons Naval Bases Why will we need naval bases to expand Overseas? To protect trade and serve as refueling ports for ships

-National Power is shown through naval superiority. -America needed… (1) modern navy (2) bases for refueling

3. Ethnic/Race Issues Based upon the idea of Social Darwinism (What is Social Darwinism?) Spread Christianity and civilization to inferior peoples

America used deceptive tactics and eventually gained control over the islands without allowing the Hawaiians to vote.

US ties since 1790 because of the sugar industry. US ties since 1790 because of the sugar industry.
