Presentation transcript:

Isolation/Entrapment The fact that George can’t be open about his grief is imprisoning him. No one can understand his grief. The fact that he is gay is important only in exploring ideas such as entrapment of grief, and the potential damage and feelings of imprisonment that it causes. “ The service is just for family” George gets told over the phone about Jim’s funeral. Tracking shot of George. Car acting as a barrier between him and the “normal” world of his neighbours. There is always a physical barrier stopping him from moving on with his future.

Isolation/entrapment You’re the one that always says we’re invisible” Jim to George. Showing that they are isolated from the rest of the world and they are invisible to the people that live in it. In the film we see a shot of George in the bathroom in his house. He is looking out the window at his neighbours through what appears to be bars. The architecture on his house is acting as a symbol for entrapment and isolation. George is inside his house, where he is “safe” and he is looking out his window at the “real” world. Showing George’s separation from the rest of the world.

The idea of not knowing The viewer is unaware at the beginning of the film if the action of the neighbours is a flashback or whether it is a view of what he is viewing. The audience never completely discover what part the neighbours play in George’s life. This storyline is one of many which have no climax. Nothing in the movie totally rounds off, everything is more or less left with no ending hence the idea of not knowing. E.g. – Charlie never kisses George, Kenny and George never become physically intimate and George doesn’t end up killing himself after all of his preparation. This makes the audience think about how you can’t plan for the future, Because even the smallest things that happen in your life may change everything.

The idea of not knowing “ For the first time in my life, I can’t see my future”. George is very unaware by what his future holds. Symbolism is used in the film which shows loss. George is lost, Charlie is lost and also the dog that belonged to Jim and George is lost, the future is lost. This idea of loss repeats throughout the film. The Audience never see any of this loss eventuate.
