Text 2 - Eulogy for Mahatma Ghandi

Intro The text is a Eulogy commemorating the humble life that Mahatma Gandhi lived, honoring him one last time. The eulogy is presented by Jawaharlal Nehru over the radio, a few days after his death emphasizing their close relationship during India’s freedom struggle. The intention of the speaker was reflecting on Gandhi’s life and his great achievements when fighting for India’s independence and consoling listeners and followers of Gandhi that he will “live on forever in our hearts”. The speaker uses various stylistic devices such as metaphors and euphemism to ease the mind of the grieving audience while presenting Gandhi as a character of greatness.

Audience and Purpose The Indian community as a whole → Gandhi: fought for Indian independance → “India’s freedom struggle” Concious

Tone and Mood Tone → passionate Personal opinion/ voice when commemorating Gandhi → his own personal experiences during their time together.

Stylistic devices Oxymoron - “warm and brightened” & “cold and dark”

Eulogy for Mathatma Gandhi By: Raphael Galvez

The gameplan: Introduction Audience & Purpose Content & Theme Tone & Mood Literary Devices Structure/Layout Conclusion

Introduction Text Type - Speech Justification - “Eulogy” - I would define this through summarizing key aspects of the type Thesis statement - That is is an effective speech due to the choice of rhetoric, stylistic features, and structure. Also there is another minor underlying purpose of the text other than to commemorate him.

Audience & Purpose Audience: Eulogies often given at a funeral service or in a home after a wake However since it is for such a great figure and by a Prime Minister, the setting of this speech would be at a place accommodating a vast number of people. In that sense it would be for Indians (Use of elective pronouns and inclusive language - “we”,”us”) Would also be telegraphed and/or recorded for international exposure
