French and Indian War Why Was This A Cause of the American Revolution?

The Causes: 1)Britain and France are Rivals 2)Britain moving west into New France

Who is Fighting? British, 13 colonies (sort of), Iroquois (hardly) French and most Native Ameri cans

The British Side  British  Colonies  Iroquois  Fight European Style - In Rows  Ben Franklin’s Albany Plan of Union tries to get colonies to help England - Colonies say “NO!”  Avoid most fighting  Only want goods

The French Side  French  Most Native Americans  Coureurs de Bois, military fought like Indians - Guerilla Warfare  Feared the English moving west in large numbers

Albany Plan of Union  Ben Franklin of Pennsylvania urges 13 colonies (who don’t get along), to create a union to help the British war effort  Colonies refuse – lack of cooperation  British aren’t disappointed – fear the colonies working together might create a problem

1)In Ben Franklin’s cartoon above, what does each section of the snake represent? 2)What was Franklin trying to accomplish with the printing of this piece? 3)How does this cartoon relate to the Albany Plan?

Causes of the French and Indian War  Fashion  Land Claims  Rivalry  Furs are wanted in Europe  English colonies push west into New France  England and France despise each other

Battles  Fort Duquesne  French Fort in what is now Pittsburgh  Three rivers allow for travel, trade  George Washington and troops sent to capture it, but caught by Indians and run away

George Washington as a 23 year old Lieutenant in the Virginia Militia

Fort Duquesne owned by French. Why was its location important?

Guerilla Warfare - hiding and fighting in small groups. “Hit and Run” tactics learned from Native Americans. Who fought this way? What advantages did it bring? Look closely - where is this location?

 Fort Necessity  Washington and men have 24 hours to build fort  Small, poorly built, Moronicstupididioticnumskull location  French and NAs capture Fort, send Washington and men home w/o weapons

Fort Necessity - Are you impressed?

 Edward “Bulldog” Braddock  Fights European style - in rows  French learned to fight like NAs - hiding and quiet (Guerilla Warfare)  Braddock’s “Sneak Attack” heard for miles  Braddock and 500 other Brits killed, Washington has troops run away  French and NAs lose 50

Creative Writing: Bulldog Braddock down! Guess what his last words were.

Turning Point  Brits capture Quebec (1759)  Cuts off supply route to French and NA troops  Too many British troops outlast the outnumbered French  French surrender in 1763

Effects of F and I War  Treaty of Paris (1763)  War Debt for Britain  Britain gets Canada, all lands to Mississippi except New Orleans  Britain gets Florida from Spain (Spain jumped in at the end)  Issues between colonists and NAs west of App. Mtns.  Because the colonies refused to fight or pay for war here, Britain is in debt  Britain decides to have colonies pay taxes for war debt (people in England paid taxes, colonists did not)  These taxes (Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Townshend Acts) lead to Revolutionary War
