 an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, hoping to find a route to India (in order to trade for spices)  met the Native Americans (Indians) thereNative Americans

 mostly from England  Jamestown, Virginia – the first town  1621 – the Pilgrim Fathers settled at Plymouth, MassachusettsPilgrim Fathers  settlers from France (Canada, Louisiana), Spain and the Netherlands (New York)  many American Indians died (diseases, wars) First Settlers

 In November 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower brought a group of Englishmen to Plymouth, Massachusetts Mayflower  interested in making a better society, not looking for gold  Thanksgiving Day (the first harvest celebration) The Pilgrim Fathers

 The African-Americans faced racism and segregation

Montegomery Bus Boycott  1955, Alabama: Rosa Parks, an African American woman, refused to give up her seat to a white man and was arrested  Black people boycotted the buses

March on Washington  August 28, 1963: Martin Luther King gave the "I Have a Dream" speech (he fought for civil rights)I Have a Dream... I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character...
