Tuesday, October 14, 2014 TODAY: You will learn about: The historical foundations and values upon which the current American government is based. You will be able to: Explain what life was like in the colonies. List examples of rights colonists valued. Connect values of colonists to your values. What tools we will use to learn: PowerPoint, Notes Sheet, questions, writing

You already know: 1.The 13 Colonies were settled by the British. 2.Before the REVOLUTIONARY WAR, the colonists were subjects of Great Britain. 3.Each colony was very different, but they shared qualities that helped shape our government today.

Where did the British settle? Were the British the only settlers? WARM UP

Reasons for Settlement Religious Freedom Trade/farming - $$ Opportunity for new land Political Freedom Escape debt Boston New York Philadelphia Charleston 1. ______________________ 2. ______________________ 3. ______________________ 4. ______________________ 5. ______________________

How did colonists earn a living? Cities Professionals – Lawyer, writer Specialized Trade or Craft – Furniture, blacksmith Worked in small factories Small Communities 90% of population! FARMERS

Colonists were… Self-Sufficient Provide for their own needs. Worked together to achieve a common goal. Ex: grew food, made medicine, wove cloth, built homes

Self-Sufficient Think of synonyms for SELF-SUFFICIENT. – Write a few words in the space provided on your worksheet Because colonists were self-sufficient, they valued their __________________ highly. Freedom

Think & Share 1.Think about the question. 2.Share your answer by raising your hand. With Mr. Connor, you began learning about the different colonies. Use what you learned to answer: What are some freedoms colonists valued?

Today’s BIG IDEA: Make a Connection Your life is very different from the life of the colonists, but you probably share many of the same values they did! Many of our “American Values” came from the struggles of the colonists! Pick an “American Value” from the list below and write about what it means to you. Freedom of speech Freedom of religion Right to a trial by jury Free elections Right to own property
