HISTORY OF INDIAN NEWSPAPERS In 1767 the attempt was made by an Englishman William Bolt to start a newspaper but it was nipped in the bud as the government deported the author of enterprise. First English newspaper – Bengal Gazatte in The size of that four-page newspaper was 12"x8". Raja Ram Mohan Roy - Brahmonical Magazine in English (1821), Sambad Kaumudi in Bengali (1821), Mirat-ul-Akbar in Persian (1822) Hindi Patriot! established in 1853, by the author and playwright, Grish Chandra Ghosh.

What is a newspaper?  A newspaper is periodical publication containing news regarding current events, informative articles, diverse features, editorials and advertising.  Newspapers are playing a vital role in the society. India is a diverse country wherein we find people from all caste and religion residing. So as in we have regional (Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil,Assamese etc) newspapers along with the English newspapers.  Newspapers in India can broadly be classified into two groups - English newspapers and language newspapers. i.)English newspapers are published in English language. They are mainly published from big cities and towns. ii.) Language newspapers are published in different Indian languages. Unlike the english papers, these are available even in the interior villages of the country. Thus they have a major role in formulating public opinion across our country.

Some factors that have contributed to the boom of newspapers in India:  Rise in literacy rate.  Expansion of the middle class  Education of women  Technological advancement  Better purchasing power  Aggressive marketing  Political awareness

GROWTH OF LANGUAGE NEWSPAPERS: The reasons for the growth of newspapers in India are equally applicable for the growth of language newspapers. But there are some other factors that helped the rise of the latter. During the early days, the language press was looked down upon as ‘vernacular dailies’ by the English press but with the rise and emergence of language media as a major force this impression has changed.  India’s rural based economy.  Coverage of local news.  The trend of advertising.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ENGLISH NEWSPAPERS AND LANGUAGE NEWS PAPERS : English newspapers are published in one language only i.e. English, whereas Indian language newspapers are published in different languages. English newspapers are mostly concentrated in big cities and major towns. Indian language newspapers are circulated all over the country. English newspapers cater mainly to the well-educated, middle class, uppermiddle class and higher income groups. Indian language newspapers are read by even lower middle class and even those below that. English newspapers have less penetration in the rural public whereas Indian language newspapers have more penetration in the rural areas. English newspapers follow the British tradition while the Indian language newspapers have evolved their own style and methods. More money is generated from advertisements in English newspapers as they circulate amongst people with better purchasing power. Indian language newspapers do not get the same amount of revenue from advertisements. English newspapers are more colourful and flamboyant. Indian language newspapers adopt a simple style.
