SWEA – “Economic Transformation” June 12, 2014

Background Sarnia-Lambton has over 100 companies, mainly SME’s, that provide support services to the major oil and petro-chemical companies in the area. Together, they employ thousands of professionals and skilled trades-people Large plant closures and downsizing over the past 15 – 20 years left many of these SME’s struggling to survive Many had no experience doing marketing – there was no need in the past

SLEP Study Supported Industry Cluster members agreed something needed to be done NRC-IRAP funding was obtained to support consultant’s Industry Study – completed May 2010 Many excellent recommendations including formation of volunteer led industry group

SLIA Formed Volunteers came forward, further support obtained from NRC-IRAP to provide training, launch website, seek out new markets, collaborate, network, get media and government attention, assist with industry attraction, identify ways to overcome obstacles etc. Now almost 40 member companies with 5 member elected volunteer board of directors. All members pay an annual membership fee. No paid employees. Supported by SLEP.

Results are starting to materialize SLIA has hosted groups from Alberta and sent members to attend and exhibit at trade shows in Halifax, Calgary, and Raleigh N.C. New contracts have been obtained which expand reach outside of traditional local market New relationships and collaborations have developed locally Many member companies are now in expansion planning mode

For new clients abroad or for potential new industry considering locating in our area, we can demonstrate that expert specialized services are available here for all phases of their needs.

Local Recognition SLIA members are proud to have been recognized recently by the Chamber of Commerce for their Innovative work. This work has helped to “transform” the way business was traditionally done here.

Good start – more to achieve Getting almost 40 companies to agree to work together to achieve growth is a challenge and is considered success in itself. Particularly when many are bitter rivals! As more success is achieved, more participation and buy-in occurs. Industry member volunteer leadership and community support have and will continue to be imperative for the continued success of the group
