Outcomes: 1. Name five frequently used propaganda techniques in advertising. 2. Define the following terms: loaded language, testimonial, bandwagon, transfer, repetition. 3. State a slogan for each of the five propaganda techniques. 4. Identify each of the five propaganda techniques in advertising.

Yesterday we talked about “propaganda.” What is “propaganda”? Using language, ideas, and information to support one side of a position (argument/opinion) while discrediting the other. What three propaganda devices (or techniques) did we learn about yesterday? Loaded language Words carefully chosen in order to provoke a certain emotional response Example: “A group of children, sitting in the park” “A gang of hooligans, loitering in the park” Testimonial When a famous person supports a particular product or idea/opinion Bandwagon Communicating that something is desirable because “everyone is doing it”

Today you get to play detective. Use your powers of observation to analyze each one of these PP slides as we examine... “Five Propaganda Techniques”

Starter #3: Add to your Cornell Notes... Define the following terms: 1. Transfer 2. Repetition State the slogan for each of these: 1) Bandwagon 2) Loaded words 3) Testimonial 4) Transfer 5) Repetition 1. Using images (pictures or photos) to get people to connect with a certain desirable feeling 2. Using the same words or pictures repeatedly so they stick in your mind 1) “Everyone else is doing it!” 2) “Those words are powerful.” 3) “I trust celebrities and experts.” 4) “A picture is worth a thousand words.” 5) “I remember things that I see (or hear) often.” Hmmm... I wonder if I will see these concepts on my next Lit test....
