Symbiosis.
“Good Buddies” Symbiotic Relationships
A relationship between different kinds of organism
 It literally means “together life”. It refers to organisms that live in close approximation; often they cannot live without each other.  Top flap)
Symbiotic Relationships. Symbiosis Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species.
Population – group of individuals of the same species
Community Interactions Community: Many species interacting in the same environment Three types of interactions: – Competition – Predation – Symbiosis.
Symbiotic Relationships. What is symbiosis? What it means: Two organisms that live together Temporarily or for a longer time At least one of the organisms.
Let’s explore some symbiotic relationships …
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among species Interactions.
Warm Up Can you think of examples of relationships where both people/ organisms benefit? Can you think of examples of relationships where one organism.
THE NATURE OF ECOLOGY Ecology is a study of connections in nature.

SPECIES INTERACTIONS. Community Interactions  Competition – occurs when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use an ecological resource.
Environmental Interdependence
Interactions in ecosystems
Community Interactions. Community interactions, such as competition, predation, and various forms of symbiosis, can powerfully affect an ecosystem.
Interactions of Living Things
Symbiosis Living Together. Competition Among Species Interactions between species most commonly starts and ends with competition for many resources. –Competition.
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among speciesInteractions.
Good Buddies Think About It … Why would a symbiotic relationship be beneficial to an organism? Let’s.
Symbiotic Relationships. Interactions Between Organisms What’s the term for when one organism eats another?
Symbiotic Relationships Mutualism- benefits both organisms Commensalism- benefits one and the other is neither helped nor harmed Parasitism- benefits one.
Ecological Interactions
Why do the pairs live together?

Ecosystems Chapter 4. What Shapes an Ecosystem? Biotic Factors: biological influences on organisms - any living thing that an organism interacts with.
Ecological Relationships. Competition and Predation Competition – occurs when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use an ecological.
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among speciesInteractions.
“Symbiosis” means “living together”

Symbiotic Relationships Activity. Symbiosis: any relationship in which two species live closely Together There are3 types:
Symbiosis: Organisms can have close ecological relationships in ecosystems Mutualism (+,+) both organisms benefit from the relationship Remoras clean sharks.
Community Interactions Community: Many different species interacting in the same environment. Three types of interactions: – Competition – Predation.

Presentation transcript:

* Competition- when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use the same ecological resource Males competing for the ability to mate

* Predation- an interaction in which one organism captures and feeds on another Lion pride catches water buffalo and gets a meal

* Symbiosis- any relationship in which two species live closely together

* Parasitism- one3 organism lives on or inside another organism harming it. Wasp’s eggs and caterpillar: wasp eggs hatch and burrow into caterpillar

* Mutualism- both organisms benefit from the relationship Bee and flowering plants: the bee gets pollen to make honey and the plants get to reproduce

* Commensalism- One member benefits the other is neither harmed not helped Shark and remora: sharks are messy eats and the remora gets to eat the bits that don’t make it into the shark’s mouth

Symbiotic Relationships A symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit EX: Cowbirds eat the bugs off of a cow’s back A symbiotic relationship where 1 organism benefits and the other is unaffected Ex: When cows walk through a field it stirs up bugs and birds eat the bugs A symbiotic relationship where 1 organism benefits and the other is harmed. Ex: A tick feeds on the blood of a dog
