Language Practice 5 sp Information for

What are the requirements? At least 8 weeks in an English-speaking country (can be 2 x 4 weeks); Integrate with local life, both socially and linguistically So: NOT language courses or tourism A written (5-6 page) report in English

Work: As an au pair, nanny, etc. In a hotel, etc. Volunteer work Camp Counsellors USA (with children 7-16): 9-11 weeks; free food and accommodation + pocket money Requires good health insurance Work & Travel (Australia) Etc. Look in the folders of language practice reports … Make use of any personal contacts you have …

Study (1): Exchange programmes ISEP (USA) ISEP Multilateral (Canada, South Africa) Bilateral agreements 6 universities in USA University of Washington, Seattle Utica College California State University, Long Beach Presbyterian College Not available in : Fort Lewis College, Durango University at Albany, State University of New York The deadline for ISEP applications is 2 nd December for next year (There is also in some cases a 16 th March deadline for the following spring term)

Study (1): Bilateral agreements 6 universities in Australia (see International Office Guide for details) 1 each in Canada, South Africa, New Zealand N.B. Places are not always available The deadline for applications is in February

Study (2): Specific exchange opportunity IUPUI: Indiana University / Purdue University in Indianapolis Two summer internship positions in the Centre for Intercultural Communications Example: the experience of Eva Norrman Student counselling, office work, corpus compilation, etc. Particularly suitable for those with linguistics-related interests The deadline for applications is normally February. Anyone who is interested should contact me for further details.

Study (3) : ERASMUS exchange agreements with four British universities: University of Wales, Bangor – 1 place / 5 months (ELit) University of Glasgow – 3 places / 9 months (ELang) University of York – 3 places / 5 months (ELit) Nottingham Trent University – 2 places / 5 months (ELit) Example: the experience of Petter Skult and Lena Englund The deadline for applications is normally mid-March. You can usually take courses in other departments; but your study plan must be accepted by us first.

Grants from the Donner Fund

Applying for a Donner grant (1) Deadline for application: mid-February Application form from Eva during February. Detailed plan required: Where are you going? What will you be doing? How long / where will you stay? What will it cost? – itemized list of estimated expenses Consult the English Dept. pages at:

Applying for a Donner grant (2) Donner money can cover: Travel expenses Living expenses (including rent at your place of work / study – but NOT in Finland during your absence) Travel insurance Placement fees (e.g. for Allianssi) Tuition - but NOT for language courses, and NOT necessarily full university fees Donner money cannot cover: Clothes, books, food, recreational activities, international student card Grants from other sources (e.g. Erasmus, ISEP) must be calculated into the sum you apply for NB: Keep all receipts: needed for report to Stiftelsen when you return.
