TORINO’S NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN LSE City Reformers Group Meeting London, 19 – 21st september 2007 Italy has no real urban policy. Urban regeneration has been mainly left to the initiative of single cities and regions Neighbourhood regeneration programs developed in Torino have no possible comparison in other italian cities (both in terms of number of neighbouhoods involved and of investments) In the lack of central government guidelines, Torino has been a real learning ground and reference for many other cities

A FOCUS ON: THE LOCAL AND THE CITY LSE City Reformers Group Meeting London, 19 – 21st september 2007 A main reason of interest is that the regeneration programmes invested the whole citiy. How was it possible in the lack of consistent national urban policies? 1.Neighbourhood regeneration programs have been developed piece after piece within a city wide perspective 2. Local action has been based on a “Neighbourhood level Working Group” connected to multidisciplinary and multidepartmental work in the public administration 3. Social and Cultural activities have been developed at the local level with the perspective of setting neighbourhoods on a city stage
