EDUC 4464 – Class 21 January 23 / 25, 2008 In the previous class we discussed Multiple Intelligences. Today we will begin by looking at Co- operative Learning Strategies. Please open up the Curriculum Unit Planner to be ready to begin.

Visual Organizers  The brain is a pattern detector and the use of visual tools helps students conceptualize in patterns. These graphic organizers make ideas visible and concrete. Go into the Curriculum Unit Planner Click on ‘L’ for Library Click on Browse Teacher Companions Under Teaching / Learning Strategies click on Visual Organizers In the pink section, click on Introduction and change to Visual Organizers Look at the different visual organizers. As a group discuss how you could use these in your classroom. Go back to Teacher Companions. Minimize when we are done. Bell Work:

Mnemonics Mnemonics is a learning tool. It helps students, especially those who are not verbal-linguistic, to remember / memorize a series of words, steps, procedures… As a Group, make a a mnemonic to remember all the multiple intelligences Not all mnemonics are word association, rhymes, or songs – they can be visual.visual

Activity 3: In groups at your table, have one person number a sheet 1 to 10 The whole group stands up when you are finished The question:  Name 10 teaching strategies

1.Open the unit planner. Under Library, Teacher Companions (you should be here when you maximize it again), under Teaching/Learning strategies click on the word Strategies 2.In the pink area, click on Cooperative Learning Strategies. Take 3 minutes and read the section in the middle which generally describes cooperative learning strategies. 3.When cued, minimize the planner – you will need it later

P – positive interdependence I – individual accountability E – equal participation S – simultaneous interaction

Roles: These can vary and can be called by different names. There are as many roles as you need. Students need to be taught how their responsibility is enacted during cooperative learning. Leader Question Poser Secretary Motivator Presenter Runner Sharer / First Talker Demonstrator Affirmer Reader

APPLICATION At some of the tables there is a number. Arrange yourselves in groups with a table which has a number. You will need your laptops. Assign roles: LEADER, SECRETARY, READER, MOTIVATOR or AFFIRMER, PRESENTER or PRESENTERS Put the appropriate sign around your neck Re-open your Curriculum Planner. Go to Teacher Companion. Look under Teaching/Learning. Click Strategies. Click Cooperative Learning Strategies (exactly where you were earlier). The Reader is to read out loud to the group your assigned co-operative strategy from the planner (click on your assigned strategy in the blue sidebar on the right hand side). Co-operative Strategies Group #1 Interview Group #2 Numbered Heads Group #3 Literature Circle Group #4 Conflict Resolution Group #5 Round Robin Group #6 Round Table Your task as a group is to teach the cooperative strategy to the rest of the group. Do this as creativity as you want. (You have 20 minutes to plan) You will present next class cooperative learning strategy (5 minutes max.)
