Cloud Computing and Big Data

Outline … Cloud computing definition Cloud computing service model Cloud computing service provider in Indonesia Cloud computing fee structure Characteristic of Big Data Unstructured, structured and semi-structured Benefit of big Data Resistance of using Big Data

Definition of Cloud Computing Describe about what happens when applications and services are move into internet. Refers to the many types of services and applications being delivered Allows for the sharing and scalable deployment of services, as needed Cloud Computing Service Model Software as a Service (SaaS) Platform as a Service(PaaS) Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

SaaS Customer purchases the service that is hosted in the cloud. Provider will take care of all software development, maintenance upgrades. Provider provides support and maintains the data center. Implemented in accounting, collaboration, CRM, field service, ERP, HRM Example : GoToMeeting , Taleo's Talent Management , Salesforce, Workday PaaS Customers purchase the access to the platform, enabling them to deploy their own software and applications in the cloud Example : Microsoft Window Azure , Salesforce, Engine Yard , AWS Elastic Beanstalk IaaS The consumers are provided with the physical infrastructure, such as server, storage, network The examples of IaaS are Amazon Rackspace, TATA Comm.Netmagic

Cloud computing provider in Indonesia PT Telekom Indonesia (Telkom) Offers SaaS E-Office XL Axiata Offers the X-Cloud service Indosat Offers enterprise-class public cloud service

Fee Structure Periodic charging Based on the number of users and an overall or per-user storage limit. This fee may be payable monthly, quarterly or yearly. Usage-based charging Charges are paid according to the amount of usage of the service by the customer

Characteristic of Big Data Definition of Big Data Term used to describe the exponential growth and availability of data, both structured and unstructured Characteristic of Big Data Volume The number of data volume Transaction-based data stored through the years Velocity Data is streaming in at unprecedented speed and must be dealt with in a timely manner Variety Data comes in all types of formats. Structured, numeric data in traditional databases.

How big data give benefit Unstructured Data Example : Satellite images, Scientific data, Photographs and video, Social media data Structured Data Example: Web log data, Point-of-sale data, Stock-trading, Financial data: Semi-Structured data Example : Web pages follow certain typical forms, Traffic signs posted along highways How big data give benefit Data -> analysis -> right decision making -> competitive advantage

Reasons why refuse to use cloud computing Possible downtime Security issues Dependency and vendor lock-in

Calculate Big Data Value Assessed through : Performance management Data exploration Social Analytics Decision Science
